BTW the little brother turned down a full scholarship to USM to walk on at LSU in the 90's when they were at there peak with Farve. What does that tell you?

You two must be rich boys? Bro wasn't good enough to get scholly to LSU. What's it supposed to tell me?

not national championship contention, but if you cant compete for a conference championship in a conference with the likes of UAB, memphis, rice, smu, uab, marshall, etc...its pretty bad

If your frame of reference is this year, then yes. Otherwise, USM is more typically at the top of the conference (and that includes the years before so many teams defected--when it was tougher to win).

quote:

my friends up there at usm are all tired of new orleans bowls and 7-5 seasons. winning the conference championship now that louisville is gone shouldnt be too much to ask...they lost to a winless Rice...at home.

Your friends might be tired of it, but it is what it is. C-USA bowl tie-ins suck. If you aren't in the Liberty Bowl as the conference champ, then you're in a bowl like the New Orleans bowl. When has USM ever competed for more than a second-tier bowl? By the way, I graduated from the school and returned to the area. So I think I have a little insight into expectations there, as well.

quote:

USM used to be one of those teams that national powers would put on their schedule as a weak OOC opponent, then once they beat nebraska in lincoln, a lot of teams backed out on them. everyone around there got used to winning the big games and when that stopped, and the 9 and 10 win seasons stopped, people got antsy...im surprised he lasted as long as he did.

9 and 10-win seasons? Dude had like four 9-win seasons in his entire career at USM (most recently last year, by the way). Southern Miss annually bumps off SEC teams (got Alabama again not to long ago). To this day USM has a reputation for scheduling anyone and then giving them all they can handle.

quote:

someone mentioned not filling the stadium, the stadium is actually being expanded, and i've been to a couple games there that were damn near sold out. when the team is playing well, people show up and stay the entire game...but who wants to pay 30 bucks to watch their team get curb stomped by rice?

The stadium expansion is a pipe dream. I tell you again, they DO NOT FILL THAT STADIUM. I've been there for season openers. Packed, it ain't.

quote:

i find it quite hypocritical that we LSU fans can bitch about 10 win seasons and bowl blow-outs and usm fans are supposed to be satisfied with a 7-5 record and a week before christmas bowl game every year.

The inherent fallacy of your argument, like the minority of USM fans who expect more, is that USM has never, and will never be, on the level of an LSU.

From Bower's press conference:

quote:

“There comes a time in any situation that you must move on. I want you to know that there is a lot of fight left in Jeff Bower. I’m not done yet.

This sounds like retiring to you?

I think the point of all this discussion is this: Southern Miss fans were pretty damn happy in the late 90's when we were consistently dominating CUSA. I don't think anyone (or at least very few folks) really believe or expect Southern Miss to be a LSU, Ohio State, etc. But what I expect - and think most other fans think - is that if you're going to be in a sub-par conference, you should at least dominate. It's like, if you gotta be in a boobie conference, you should at least expect to own all the other boobs. We haven't done that in years.

Personally, I think this change has been needed for a while; and while I do think Bower is a good man, I think all parties are better served with his departure.

As we sat in MM Roberts stadium Saturday afternoon and observed all the changes that have been made/are being made, we discussed that we felt we had all the ingredients for a great program....minus a team that could step it up to the next level. Staduim/field looks awesome; new athletic field house is great. I think in a few years we will have the team and coaches to match the rest of the improvements.

To the assclowns on here that say we shouldn't expect anything more than a 7-5 season, I say would y'all not have been putting "For Sale" signs in his year 10 seasons ago? One loss for a LSU coach and everyone is up in arms about how it's a sign of the apocolypse and the coaches need to be fired. Don't believe me? Go to the Rant. Just because we're not a national powerhouse doesn't mean we can't aspire to be.

To Bower I say thanks for the work and dedication, and I wish you all the best.

Now, bring on a new era in Southern Miss football! SMTTT!

As we've discussed many times, I definitely think the change will do us some good.

I hope Bower is able to find success somewhere else. This can't be easy for him or his family, but he is a good man and has been nothing but a class act.

The game of college football is no longer just a game; it's a business. And unfortunately being a "good man" doesn't win games or garner loyalty from fans. If you want to be regarded for being a "good man", you should be a preacher. If you want to be regarded as a coach worth keeping, win the games that matter (even ocassionally) and the games that don't all the time.

They went 7-5 this year, which is Bower's 14th straight winning season and received an invitation to the Papajohns.com Bowl Saturday...

This will be something like his 10th bowl game in the last 11 seasons.....

Speaking as a USM allumni I think this was a stupid move...Bower is USM...They won't be better without him.

That would be the Sun Belt, not CUSA, and it is still hard to accomplish much with the resources available.

its bowers rap ,anyway all coaches ive ever known ARE MAJOR PRICKS. bower has done more with less talent than any other coach. i don't think he likes pressure of a LSU but he is the real deal unlike curly who rode farves arm to hc position

well you're a fricking genius. but why should they settle for 7-5 seasons just because they arent LSU? they aren't in the SEC, but as an alumni and local, surely you cant see a reason why they shouldn't be able to beat rice on a yearly basis.

I have mixed feelings about this move. Bower is one of the nicest coaches you will ever meet, but he would also get in your azz if you messed up. He is a very good football coach and he can find some diamonds in the rough. He ran a VERY clean program at USM and would not put up with any thugs. On the other hand, the program has slipped in recent years and USM has had some terrible losses in the past few years. I hope USM finds a good replacement and I hope Coach Bower finds a good job.
