re: Why are people so unwilling to admit that recruiting is a legit question mark for Campbell

They will determine if the candidate is willing to get their hands dirty in recruiting. If you're looking for that warm soft woobie of assurance that he will kick arse in recruiting, you need to find a safe space.

Your comparison between Mullen and Campbell is way off base.
Being a successful recruiter is mostly about prioritizing it and working your arse off at it. Mullen simply doesn't work hard at recruiting and isn't very good at it.
Everything I read indicates Campbell works very hard at recruiting. Any coach that comes to LSU and works hard at recruiting should have success. Especially if he keeps guys like Joseph and Raymond.
He also knows the importance of locking down your home state, which is very important at LSU. Importance of in-state recuruiting
To your original post, which candidates don't have question marks when it comes to recruiting? Honestly, I'd be thrilled if Aranda was the hire, but I'd be much more concerned about him prioritizing scheme over recruiting than Campbell. I don't think because Napier worked for Saban that he has any fewer question marks when it comes to recruiting.
Recruiting simply isn't rocket science. It's about building relationships and connecting with people. I believe Campbell has the work ethic and personality to do very well in recruiting at LSU.

I’m less concerned with his actual recruiting abilities and much more concerned with a lack of connections in the South. Relationships with HS coaches go a loooong way in getting kids from Louisiana, Texas, Florida, Mississippi, and Georgia. LSU has to pull those kids to stay competitive in the SEC.
He'll be the head coach at LSU. It's not rocket science. Win games against elite competition and go to the pros. I don't know why people think this is so difficult. LSU has one of the best natural built-in recruiting advantages there are.

If Campbell is the hire, that means we missed on Jimbo and Riley, the only candidates with a proven track record at recruiting on lists circulating on this board.
So we move to next tier candidates, all of which have various question marks and one of them for each is recruiting.
That being said, LSU gets 1/3 to almost 1/2 of its class each year from the state of Louisiana. Kids from the state want to play here. That is evident by the 8 commitments from Louisiana we have now when they have no idea who will be coach next year.
Whoever comes here will get a shot in the arm with recruiting just by being the LSU coach.

The difference is that Campbell is extremely likable and has proven his skill in building a good culture.
Mullen is a toxic fricking weasel and doesn’t bother to recruit at all. His team has completely quit on him.

I’m not at all concerned about recruiting. LSU will always have top-10 classes; what’s so much more important is development and scheme.

I mean... it's really not. They're both good on-field and development coaches who are uncertain recruiters. Perhaps Mullen is a *worse* recruiter, but the fact is that campbell hasn't proven anything as a recruiter, and Mullen is (imo) the better on-field coach.

Fickell and Napier have both recruited at elite levels for their conferences. The jump to SEC would still be a significant adjustment, but I trust the guys at the top of their conference in recruiting rankings more than campbell. Napier has the further added benefits of (1) being familiar with Louisiana, and (2) having been an integral part of the recruiting apparatus of title-contending programs. He's fished in these waters before; campbell hasn't.
As for Aranda, I view his recruiting as basically the exact same question mark as campbell, except that he has familiarity with the region and has experience recruiting high-level players before. Beyond recruiting, I think Aranda is a far better defensive coach than Campbell is an offensive coach. I view aranda and campbell similarly, with aranda having a small advantage in on-field coaching and a small advantage in recruiting due to his experience at LSU.
Stoops I view as similar to Campbell but with a better recruiting track record. He is slowly and steadily moving kentucky up in the recruiting world, and probably has them operating near their ceiling in that regard. That's similar to Campbell, with the exception of the fact that Stoops is doing it in the SEC and with higher-level players.

Campbell’s has averaged a class ranking of 52.1
The 10 years prior averaged 61.1 and the 4 years prior averaged 64.25
He’s elevated recruiting there, but not exactly crushing it.

A lack of experience recruiting at the high-end of college football isn't an "alleged" shortcoming--it objectively IS a shortcoming.
Does it mean that he will certainly fail as a recruiter if we hire him? Absolutely not. But it IS a question mark, and a question mark is a shortcoming.

Really it is. Mullen is a known pompous douchbag who has very little interest in recruiting and working hard at it. Matt Campbell works very hard at it, and seems like a genuinely likeable guy.

Is he even a realistic option? I'd have him at the top of my wish list over Riley.

You lost me here. I'm not sure how recruiting rankings in there conferences is of any significance in projecting how they will recruit to LSU. Recruiting is just about working really hard and building relationships.

No, it's not. A shortcoming is a known deficiency. A question mark is a potential deficiency.

what kinds of recruiting connections did saban and les have to the south when they were named as LSU's new coach? They both turned out to be pretty good at recruiting the area.

Campbell has never even attempted to recruit the types of kids he will need 15-20 of per year at LSU
in the other thread you said you aren't saying coaches should recruit the same at mid level programs. Iowa State is one of the bottom programs in the P5 so to expect him to recruit the same players is foolish. He does have the #3 class in the Big 12, witht he limited resources he has that's outstanding.

Maybe he will be able to pull it off--but it's far from a guarantee. Why are people acting like it's a guarantee?
there are no guarantee's, if that is what you are expecting you will be sorely disappointed.
