Why are people so unwilling to admit that recruiting is a legit question mark for Campbell

Campbell has never even attempted to recruit the types of kids he will need 15-20 of per year at LSU. Maybe he will be able to pull it off--but it's far from a guarantee. Why are people acting like it's a guarantee?
You can pull off 7 win seasons in the Big 12 with good scouting and development, but if you want to compete for national titles, you need blue chippers, plain and simple.
What's the difference between Matt Campbell and Dan Mullen (aside from the fact that Mullen is better at developing QBs and had proven success at a higher level prior to being hired at florida)?

Matt Campbell is coaching at Iowa State. Context matters.

The discussion about Campbell isn't that advanced to where we have gotten into this minutia yet

question is is campbell willing to get reasonably dirty in the sec?

The Rants search for the perfect candidate continues. Experts say it’s more likely to find the Loc ness monster than this artifact, but alas thousands of posters keep digging until they find it.

We’ve got the children’s hospital to take care of recruiting
(I kid, I kid)
*I like Campbell a lot, but recruiting in the Top10 is definitely a question mark. Same for Aranda.

This is why these up and coming startup type coaches are a risk. They don't always translate to this level. It seems logical to say, "wow, look at how he has outcoached everyone with less talent at ISU and maximized their potential.. if he maximized LSU's potential, he'd be in the playoffs every year!"
It doesn't work that way in the SEC. Talent is on a bell curve. The elite talent skews to the right and it is disproportionately concentrated in the SEC versus other conferences. Other conferences may have 1 or 2 schools who are like that, but generally the rest of the talent falls at the median or below. It is a more balanced playing field.
To survive in the SEC, you have to match up with those 4-5 other schools with that elite talent or you don't have a chance over the long haul.

Exactly. I'm all in for this guy. He is the right guy to build the culture of LSU back up. He could do great things here.

There are no options that fit this bill other than Riley and he's apparently not coming.

There are question marks--especially about recruiting the SEC--about every single coach on our supposed list outside of Jimbo and Riley. Like, what do you expect exactly?

That's fine - just pointing out the risk. It's Woodward's job to calculate that risk and assign it the value of either offering whatever $ amount he needs to minimize the risk or go in another direction.
eta. Would feel much better about Campbell if he was known for his days recruiting as an assistant at an SEC school.

That’s a big question mark for me. I think he’ll do great but honestly, not being on a SEC staff does scare me a little. In recruiting, if it was just based on how good of a coach you were then Nick Saban would get every player he ever wanted (he does a lot but not always). Recruiting is always evolving and Campbell doesn’t have a huge track record of developing a ton of NFL talent unlike Aranda.

Outside of Saban, what coach is a guarantee?

Sure, but context is important…he’s at Iowa St. he’s built a respectable program at a bottom dwelling school.
Recruiting will be a question mark for 99% of coaches.
His teams play hard for him every damn game, schemes great on O/D and has built a great culture. That’s the signs of a Solid coach with a…”process”.
Everyone wants a “Sabanesque” hire, I get it. But you have to identify those traits in a young coach, he and Napier have those.
Compare Saban at Toledo and Michigan state with Campbell / Napier…it’s eerily similar. Is it a guarantee, no. But that’s why you have a proper search and evaluation, unlike the Ed hire.

Woodward isn't going fricking car shopping. You pay what it takes to lure the best coach you can get. Period.

Some don't want to admit this, but it is ABSOLUTELY true. A&M has many recruits on a loose "payrolls" (Jaquelin Roy's family was being given $400 or so a week...not that LSU didn't have their hands in the mix either). Recruits aren't just flocking because Saban is just a swell guy. Kirby is fighting battles with Saban. Texas and OU will soon be in the mix. Auburn and Tennessee desperately want to be back in the top tier of the league on a consistent basis.
Recruiting is a blood sport in the SEC. If Campbell is not willing to engage in that fight that is fine (and maybe somewhat admirable). But it also means LSU is not the place for him.
If the final decision would come down between say Mel Tucker and Campbell, I'm taking Tucker unless Campbell convinces me he can recruit at the level LSU has to recruit. I'm confident Tucker can even though I think Campbell may be the better "coach"

maybe because its a waste of time to try to get those kids at iowa state?

That's why i said it's a question mark and not a guaranteed negative.
If you can't admit that recruiting is a question mark, you have on homer glasses, plain and simple. Iowa State had the 59th ranked class in the 2021 cycle.

This is my philosophy as well - to me paying whatever it takes is the less risky, optimal, move.. no matter how large the number is
