you can hire recruiters. we just fired the best one in the nation.

quote:Exactly. Very valid question. One question among others that he would need to address about recruiting here.
question is is campbell willing to get reasonably dirty in the sec?
He checks a lot of boxes, for me anyway. He's not alone in that. But recruiting is the foundation of CFB, even more so at this level and even more considering our competition in our division alone. You gotta get the hosses.
And you WILL have to get dirty. You're right in asking if he is willing.
I'd add how dirty?
I'd also add does he know how to get dirty?

maybe because its a waste of time to try to get those kids at iowa state?
The point is not that he should've been recruiting those kids to Iowa State. The point is that we don't know if he'll be able to do the things necessary to recruit them in general.
Recruiting blue chip kids is a completely different ballgame from recruiting the tier of kids Campbell has typically recruited. It is a completely different process that requires entirely different approaches and tactics, and we have zero evidence that Campbell is capable or even willing to do those things.

It's hilariously telling that you are getting downvoted just for asking the question. People on this board are simply not interested in having a real conversation--they just want smoke blown up their asses.

My recruiting fear with a guy like Campbell isn’t necessarily getting the top guys in state, but more so how he’d fill the class out.
You have to assume he’s developed an affinity with certain types of players since he’s been successful, and that’s the part that may not translate when you’re competing with UGA and Bama.
I can just imagine that first big Junior Day recruiting weekend next year, and we get a couple booms from a 3 star white TE from Florida and some random 3 star LB from Texas that no one had ever heard of. Everyone would panic that he doesn’t get the level of competition he’s about to get into.

Like Dan Mullen has done at florida?
Elite recruiting isn't something you achieve just by deciding that you want elite recruiting. It's laughable that you guys are acting like SECW-level recruiting success is a foregone conclusion for Campbell.

There literally is no hire that would satisfy some of you.
This guy doesn’t exist:
-proven recruiter bringing in top-5 classes at a P5 school
-never lost a game
-expert on at least one side of the ball

On Rivals, Iowa State is currently ranked No. 23, ahead of Oklahoma State, Tennessee, Mississippi State, Baylor, Auburn, UCLA, Ole Miss, Wisconsin and Minnesota.
They have commits from powerhouse programs around the country, including IMG.

I 100% guarantee you it is a consideration and will be discussed with the candidates before they are hired. Therefore, whoever is hired will have been vetted in this regard. Now you can sleep tonight.

He's done it at a higher level and more consistently than any coach in modern history at Iowa State.
This is a bottom dweller program in Ames. He'll recruit just fine. He actually does a marvelous job of finding diamonds in the rough he can actually get there. That is real recruiting by way of incredible scouting.

Excuse me what the frick?
lol if you think Matt Campbell is a better candidate now than Mullen was when florida hired him, you are outside of your mind.
Campbell is a solid on-field coach who is a great scouter and developer and a complete question mark as a recruiter.
Mullen is/was an elite on-field coach who was a great scouter and developer and a subpar recruiter. If you're unwilling to even entertain the idea that they're the same guy, you aren't being objective.

Diamonds in the rough don't cut it in the SECW. As much as people like to parrot the line "stars don't matter", the fact is that you need bluechippers--and lots of them--in order to compete for titles.
To say that successful recruiting is a foregone conclusion for Campbell is absolutely fricking delusional.
Nobody is saying that he WONT be able to find recruiting success. But the fact that you refuse to even acknowledge that it's a question mark is hysterical.

that head coach is gonna have to live and breathe recruiting, which is why some are gunshy on aranda, however, dave is known around here.
i get that campbell might be the best gameday coach on anyone's list but man, you don't just become a beastly recruiter overnight.
how tough of a sell is campbell gonna be to hs coaches, parents, etc?
it's a real unknown to me.

For the same reason people are unwilling to admit he's a good coach. He could be a failure, he could be a success. I have my list of coaches I like, what I like doesn't mean shite.
Doesn't matter who is hired, they will be hated day 1.

"hey are you a good recruiter?"
"yeah"
"cool, nothin to worry about!"

There are question marks--especially about recruiting the SEC--about every single coach on our supposed list outside of Jimbo and Riley. Like, what do you expect exactly?
What do i expect? For people to be able to have an honest conversation about those question marks.
Your argument is that, because there is no perfect candidate, we aren't allowed to discuss the shortcomings of our various options? lmao gtfoh

your point is dumb. he recruits the kids to iowa state that he can get and fit the program. do you think there isn't any competition for those kids? do you think iowa state is the only offer those kids have? there is competition for recruits even among 3 stars and lower. so yes, he knows how to recruit.

Campbell has never even attempted to recruit the types of kids he will need 15-20 of per year at LSU. Maybe he will be able to pull it off--but it's far from a guarantee. Why are people acting like it's a guarantee?
I’m less concerned with his actual recruiting abilities and much more concerned with a lack of connections in the South. Relationships with HS coaches go a loooong way in getting kids from Louisiana, Texas, Florida, Mississippi, and Georgia. LSU has to pull those kids to stay competitive in the SEC. My concern with Campbell is how long it takes him to build those connections could set the rebuild back significantly. If a guy isn’t a big fish (Riley), give me the good coaches with connections in the region. Napier and/or Aranda are the best second options.

The point was not that he'll keep doing just that, but rather that he's got a great eye for talent. In Louisiana especially I think that is crazy valuable. Every year we're deciding between state grown talent as our class fills up.
I think we'd recruit very well with him here and I think he'd be amazing at scouting, development, and roster management.
