You can define “hireable” as you want, but I would say don’t include elite coaches (Saban, Dabo, Kirby, Brian Kelly) and/or recently hired P5 coaches (Sark, Lincoln, Dykes).

My list:
1. Lane Kiffin
2. Lance Leipold
3. Chris Kleiman
4. Luke Fickell
5. Jamey Chadwell

He's not in the top 5, but I think Clark Lea will turn out to be a good hire for Vandy. They have improved a ton over the course of the season which is a key sign you want to look for early on. Lea went to Vandy but I could see him jumping up in a few years.

I don't understand the Kiffin love.

It’s a matter of opinion. Feel free to give yours.

Every coach is “hireable” now since Brian Kelly left Notre Dame (still the Holy Grail of coaching jobs to many)

Sure, theoretically.

But listing Saban, Smart, Harbaugh, Kelly and Ryan Day as my top candidates doesn’t seem like a productive discussion.

I would throw Tom Herman near the top considering he currently isn't coaching and he has more NY6 wins than everyone on your list combined.

Then make your list, rather than throwing another candidate on my list.

You asked for hireable head coaching candidates and I gave one with reasons why. Why are you getting defensive?

And coaches who may be “hireable” for one program may not be hireable for another

I asked for top 5, and rather than give your top 5, you gave reasons why my list is incorrect.

And I’m not defensive. I honestly want to hear opinions of how people rank candidates.

I like his offense. He’s also been very successful and I think he would do great at good P5 school.

Fired by the Raiders.
Skips out on UT after one 7-6 season for USC where he gets fired on the tarmac.
OC at Bama where he is good but gets dumped before a NC game due to his antics.
Coaches three seasons at FAU with one of them being a losing season.
He’s 14-10 in the SEC at Ole Miss.

Other than his being funny on Twitter, what am I missing?

He’s the Brian Harsin of Coastal Carolina football. He didn’t build that program and won’t be able to duplicate it.

True. I think the hireability depends on the schools making the hires in any given year. All those guys are technically hireable but I don’t think any of the openings this year are the ones that pull them away.

Elite: Saban and CBK
Proving their worth: Kirby
Hasn't really played anyone: Dabo

I’ve followed BK since his GVSU days. He’s a great coach, but to say he’s elite and Smart isn’t Is a stretch of epic proportions.
