That norm can be broken.

LSU fans would have lost their shite if Arkansas had money whipped them.

75% of the fanbase would have fired miles on 1/10/12. That number only increased after that date which I’m 90% sure the arky rumors were after that.

Not without federal legislation forcing it.

ADs will wise up when they start getting fired without their own buyouts

Otherwise it’s just spending other people’s money

I should've been a football coach. Willie Taggart is still coaching football and making 6 figures, the guy who used to smoke blunts in Bobby Bowden's office and have dance parties at practice is a running backs coach in the NFL even though he played QB and doesn't know frick about RBs. Once you're in the club you're in it for life

I can buy that for a new hire but for say OU or TAMu and an extension?

What are you talking about? If A&M doesn’t extend Elko, he’s taking a similar offer from Penn State.

Now you have a lame duck coach leading your team into the playoffs, or an Ole Miss situation, your fanbase wants your head on a platter and your school reputation takes a major hit while the entire media laughs at you and says “What in the hell are you doing? You have the most successful coach in your programs history and you let him walk on the cusp of your schools first playoff berth?”

Thats why all the “A&M was stupid to give Elko that contract,” is so silly.

It’s message board nonsense that views a situation in a silo.

Into everyone agrees together to stop giving contracts like that out, it’s not going to stop. Every single school is doing it.

Well if you read the thread it was about Jimbo but glad you brought up Elko because it illustrates the point of idiotic extensions for one season.

Now tamu is saddled once again in a jimbo situation except jimbo actually had a history of real hardware.

Should have let him go. Dude hasnt proven anything

Very easy for a fan to say. I would also disagree with hasn't proven anything, as they made the playoffs.

Trev Alberts already has a disgruntled fanbase with the Schloss situation.

Also, you let Elko walk, who are you going get? That has done more than Elko had to that point?

I also don't think Elko is a bad coach. I think he made some mistakes this year at the coordinator spots, but Marcel Reed's regression was completely unpredictable. Yes the schedule was soft, but Reed can't move the ball against the Citadel and that just wasn't an issue last year.

12 team playoff is making a bcs bowl.

Tamu wouldn’t have extended him for making the cotton bowl with no SEC championship or NC.

Elko accomplished what manny Diaz and David cutcliffe did at Duke.

Kevin Sumlin and Jimbo did more than Elko did last year at tamu.

If he went it all depends on the timing but given it would have been done sooner than they hired Matt Campbell setting that hire date as who was available guys like Chesney promoting Colin Klein and Willie Fritz would have all been on the table. I still think Mack Leftwich will be a great hire particularly for a Texas school and will get looks this year. Feel the same way about Jamey Chadwell also though I get his aberration 4-8 year last year would have been a problem for hiring.

I think all of those would have at least been 4-4.

There's seemingly no cost benefit analysis for paying coaches.

You could get a ton of solid coaches at decent prices but instead everyone is willing to shoot the moon to slightly increase the odds of getting someone who will be great.

But most of the time it doesn't work out, making the gamble an obvious loser.

Unless all ADs, fans, and donors collectively agree to a mindset to "break it", it won't.

Again, it's not dumb ADs driving the salaries. It's the outrageous demands of fans/donors.

For example, Will Stein has done a very good job at Kentucky this season. His name will probably be mentioned in the job searches of "bigger" programs. Stien may not truly want to leave UK after just one season. The other schools may not actually want him. But he's (through his agent) going to allow his name to be floated as a candidate for other jobs.

If you are the Kentucky AD do you, as a preemptive measure, rip up the current 5 year contract and give him a new 6, 7, 8 year extension with a much bigger salary to make sure he stays at UK? Or do you stand pat and say, we want you here but we aren't doing a new gully guaranteed contract after just one season?

If the AD does the latter and Stein leaves, UK fans and donors will want the AD fired. But if the AD gives the big raise and Stien tanks (similar to Norvell) in years 2, 3, 4, UK fans and donors will be pissed at the AD for giving him such a bad contract.

The only way the AD "wins" is if he keeps the HC and the HC continues to perform well. But even then the AD will just get leveraged every year for a bigger contract. It is the FANS and donors who have to say enough is enough and be willing to accept losing their coach and potentially regressing in success. Until that happens (and it won't), the "norm" won't change.

Quit trying to win the press conference. All coaching hires are a shot in the dark. Get a cheap hot runner from G6 or FCS or a coordinator and give him 2 or 3 years to prove himself. You don't want the next Jimbo, you want the next Chesney.

Every state legislature should write a law that no government employee can have these types of contracts. They all just need to get on board with one another.

This^ but on the counter most of the coaches, at least the ones in demand, are represented by two or three agents who will continue to demand it so it's not going to change anytime soon.
