Archer was worse and so was Orgeron.

Hallman was just an incompetent drunk. O is well, O.

Archer left the team with literally NO talent when he left. At least Dinardo had some players to work with when he arrived.

Point of order:

LSU played Miami once, in 1988(but did, in fact, get mud stomped). LSU had previously played Miami in 1969 and did not play them again until the Chicken Sammich Bowl in 2005. The above quote implies that LSU played them several times.

Y'all may now proceed.

That's another big myth - Dinardo recruited fine

Solid. Dinardo's problem was NOT talent. The program went downhill under him when his great assistant hires left and he replaced them with jokes. Dinardo did bring back the magic after 6 straight losing seasons in a big way. We won 7, 10, then 9 games his first 3 years here, but when his assistants got hired away and he tried to replace them with bottom-basement hires, we tanked. The talent was stocked when Saban got here, he just filled it up even more.

No, it was not Curley's coaching that was bad. The job went to his ego! Archer was the worst. Some of the horrible things he did with Harvey. And, in front of the whole team. He was a DB coach at best. Never will be any more.

As Ace pointed out previously in this thread, after leaving LSU, Mike Archer went on to coach LBs for a Superbowl team and he was also DC at Kentucky. Apparently there was/is some talent there. Hallman.......not so much.

We averaged 32.7 points per game in '98 ( I believe) and lost seven of those games. How many 36-33 games did anyone need to see to understand that it was the defensive coaching that buried DiNardo? He became paranoid, held on to Lou, and lost his job. His hiring of coaches and consolidation of power in every aspect of the program while in his paranoid state was very different from how Les has handled things. It is because of that obvious difference that I don't understand the Miles=DiNardo mindset displayed across this board..

Curley wasn't even the worst hire in LSU's history. Archer was the worst for LSU. Believe it or not, Curley actually improved the program. It's just that Archer's destruction was so thorough you couldn't tell.

How many of those recruits panned out? Recruiting rankings were not reliable back then. Guy's like Tyrone Malone, Chad Loup and a QB from Fla who's name is escaping me.

Perhaps Archer turned out to be a better assistant caoch, but recruiting was better under Hallman. There was more talent on campus when Dinardo got here than when Hallamn did.

He was an excellent, if not outstanding, assistant coach before (under Arnsparger). And there was a difference in talent levels, but, in hindsight, it was slight, and probably more "quantity of quality" which gave Dinardo a little more room to work. The differences are that Archer and Dinardo were relatively bright guys, and each brought a certain minimum level of competence. Hallman was this doofus and just lucked up and was at Southern Miss at the same time Brett Favre was there. How much effort did that take? (Like Pat Riley at the Lakers in the 80s - what did have to do? Show up with some basketballs and a suit, and say, "Magic, Big Man, Guys, go win us a basketball game.")

If losing was an art form, Hallman's time at LSU was the "Mona Lisa" of college football.

Given the fact that LSU passed on candidates like future great college coaches who were interested (Steve Spurrier while at Duke) and then-name NFL coaches who were interested (Sam Rutigliano) to cave in to pressure from the players to promote a never-before and never-again HC to the LSU HC position, who then took what Bill Arnsparger built and turned it into shite, I'd say Mike Archer is a strong candidate for worst LSU hire in modern history.

That & ND hiring Gerry Faust right out of high school have to rank 1 & 1A.

Oh, yeah, the Webels skip-promotion of O from DL coach to HC ranks right there with those 2.
