Once Dinardo had his own people..it all went downhill again.

That's another big myth - Dinardo recruited fine, particularly when you consider that he had to resell the program, which was a loser, to Louisiana kids, who just 10 years previous would have been automatic LSU players. It was the very inadequate coordinators, particularly defensively (Lou Tepper) that were the main culprits. I think that Dinardo doesn't get enough credit for "The One"'s success.

The cupboard wasn't exactly empty. Just a few players from Dinardo's last two signing classes from which "The One" greatly benefited:

PK John Corbello, Lafayette, La. (St. Thomas More)
DB/RB Domanick Davis, Breaux Bridge, La. (Breaux Bridge)
TE Eric Edwards, Monroe, La. (Ouachita Christian)
LB Treverance Faulk, Lafayette, La. (Lafayette)
LB Bradie James,West Monroe, La. (West Monroe)
DB Prentis Jenkins,Vidalia, La. (Vidalia HS/Holmes JC)
P Donnie Jones, Baton Rouge, La. (Catholic)
DE Chad Lavalais, Marksville, La. (Marksville)
DB Norman LeJeune, Brusly, La. (Brusly)
WR Jerel Myers, Houston, Texas (Madison)
OL Rodney Reed,West Monroe, La. (West Monroe)
DL Melvin Richey, Decatur, Ga. (SW DeKalb HS/Berkshire Prep)
RB LaBrandon Toefield, Independence, La. (Independence)
DL Kenderick Allen, Bogalusa, La. (Bogalusa)
TE Jason Baggett, Baytown, Texas (Lee)
DL Byron Dawson, Shreveport, La. (Evangel)
DL Howard Green, Donaldsonville, La. (Donaldsonville)
DB Damien James, Carencro, La. (Carencro)
DL Chad Lavalais, Marksville, La. (Marksville)
LB Jeremy Lawrence, Ferriday, La. (Ferriday)
RB Josh Reed, Rayne, La. (Rayne)
WR Reginald Robinson, Shreveport, La. (Fair Park)
OT Rob Sale, Monroe, La. (Neville)

Curley actually improved the talent level significantly over his watch. This was the talent that DiNardo won early with.

This is where I often disagree with the pundits. I give Curley great credit for the 92 recruiting class - that was an excellent class. However, 1991 was terrible, 93 was pretty good, and 94 was just okay . Certainly Dinardo had a tougher job, to sell the program that was even regionally perceived as a loser/rebuilding program. Dinardo's first couple of classes were just "okay", but as good as 93 and 94 for Curley (and I don't care what the ratings were at the time, I'm looking at the list and judging from how they worked out as players).

While Curley (appropriately named after a stooge) peaked with his second class, Dinardo's classes were getting better and better, as indicated in my last post.

and how were Archer's classes trending?

They were bad. I would say, much like Curley, Archer's second class, 1989, was his best. But it would be just "okay" when compared to Curley and Dinardo's classes, probably only better than Curley's first class.

Archer fundamentally failed because of recruiting. As opposed to Curley, who fundamentally failed because the almighty, in His infinite wisdom did not bless Curley, in certain ways. No amount of good recruiting could have fixed Curley Hallman (I don't know how else to say it). In other words, had Brett Favre been allowed to play for four more years, and come with Curley to LSU, he might have won 20-22 games in 4 years, instead of 18.

There is no rational way to defend this.

Dean definitely hired Hallman. The short list included Steve Spurrier and Mike Shanahan.

You are confusing years, we hired Hallman after the 1990 season, that was Spurrier's first year at UF, he was not a candidate in 1990. It has been rumored retroactively that he wanted the LSU job in 1987 when we hired Archer.

I guess a good tie breaker between Archer and Hallman is what each did after leaving LSU. Archer has done very well as a DC in the College game and was a LB coach for the Steelers. Hallman got fired a the Muscles Shoals HC. Case closed.

Wasn't Bobby Bowden really wanting the LSU job and was a prime candidate when Archer was hired? Or was that when Arnsparger was hired?

Neither, in 1979 when Cholly Mac was fireed, errr, retrired, Bowden was considered a candidate, believe it or not he was on the hot seat at FSU. Bowden himself has said it was a win at LSU that saved his job at FSU, if he had lost that game, he might have been the hire instead of Bo Rein. By 87, he wasn't going anywhere.

You may be right. Arnsparger was looking forward to possibly hire Spurrier (at Spurrier's Alma Mater), and therefore pushed Archer for the LSU vacancy (at least that's how the conspiracy theorists view it.) When Hallman was hired, Shanahan was the QBs coach at Denver, but had already been head coach for the Rams.

I may have merged those legends/stories/myths/truths.

Really, Mike Archer was the youngest coach in D1 in 1987 and went 10-1-1 and finished #5 and to the best of my knowledge, he never sniffed another HC job.

I've never heard this (sounds like we are close in age, I started at LSU in the fall of 87). I know Arnsparger wanted the AD job at LSU and conspiracy theorists have said that Dale Brown, among others, did not want the FB coach was AD and we wind up with a basketball guy in Dean.

I think not having an AD doomed the search and I've always heard the players lobbied for Archer.

Me, too. Though I had already done two years at LSU-A, fall 1987 was my first on the big campus.

West Laville, no A/C, represent...

Yep, it's always that freakin' "Los Angeles" part that gets me. Just no such thing as "Los Angeles Raiders"......(but there was).

We had hall baths, and ceiling fans. However, no on ever fell to their death from a West Laville window (at least not that I can remember, anyway).
