Oh know being a player, asst coach, and HC he didn;t know what was going on. He fits at UT though.

A lot of smoke. Still not confirmed. Would be a great hire if true.

The timeline is not what makes me hesitant. Wilcox has been rumored to be considered elsewhere for a while now, so this could have been cooking for a week or longer.

What makes me hesitant is that Shannon is too good of a hire for UT at this juncture. Unless he believes he is better positioning himself for a HC job next year.

No freaking way Hart and the boosters are signing off on that. At least I hope not.

With the cloud over Miami, I'd say you are right. But if you are Shannon, with a solid reputation as a DC, it doesn't hurt him too much to try.

I really hope he's your next DC. Great hire for UT IMO. Great because he's a douche.

Randy Shannon could really help change the culture at Tennessee. Here is the links to his entire recruiting class by year while at Miami.

2007 Miami Recruiting Class
2008 Miami Recruiting Class
2009 Miami Recruiting Class
2010 Miami Recruiting Class

I hope its worth the million that UT will be paying him.

This would be too good of a hire for Dooley to make.

Not sure there is a more overrated coach in college football than Randy Shannon. A disaster as a HC. And not sure how much actual "coordinating" he did while the alleged DC. But I'm sure it will all work out for the Vols.

It's hard to imagine Tennessee doing much else than hiring someone very unproven or just promoting from within.

Meanwhile, it seems that Gene Chizik is sitting around with his finger up his rear end.

That site is still riding with Shannon, but others are saying that Steele is the #1 choice.

Texas fans were salivating at the prospect of landing Shannon last year.

I'm beginning to wonder how good Steele actually is. He's a tremendous recruiter, but his defenses haven't been that great at Clemson. He was co-DC at Alabama in 2007-08. He was an assistant at Florida State with Mickey Andrews from 2002-06. His head coaching experience was at Baylor, but not many guys do well there. I know he went to UT and has had two stints as an assistant, but other than that what is the appeal?

Dooley supposedly had Steele all but signed the first go around when hired, but Steele backed out over an issue with the AD (Hamilton).

Wilcox and Sirmon did a really good recruiting job and he needs someone to fill that void. Being that a lot of guys will not attach themselves to Dooley at this point, I am guessing that Dooley is hoping Steele's ties to UT as well as relationship with Dooley and Hart (new AD) will be enough to bring him to UT, bc that is probably the best they can pull for now. In addition, he will help keep defensive recruits in tact and put an adequate D on the field.

5 years at 1mil per huh? Well that should make the firing of Dooley more expensive

Word on the street is Shannon will be hired early next week if not the weekend. Dooley top candidate was Steele with Shannon being a close #2 and Dave Hart said Shannon was the guy.
