They should go after Matt Rhule but they won't

Mara has money to burn. Don't surprised if it's Peyton. Money and draft choices.

What was the back story with Payton leaving there? I know there was drama to it but I can't remember.
I think he could give a shot in the arm to Eli's career so this job is probably the most intriguing possibility to me for him aside from Indy, but not sure if the past would rule it out

If he can make it there, he can make it anywhere.

Gotta be CSP. Instant celebrity in NYC, great personnel situation, big money, lots of pussy. Perfect scenario for him.

If you know who his defensive coordinator and defensive player personnel are, you'll know whether he'll succeed. He's been 7-9 the last two years with awful defenses. He had most of his success with Gregg Williams providing a defense that was average, which is what Payton needs to be successful. The other two years where the Saints went to the playoffs without Williams ('06 and '13), they had fluke defensive performances because the defense tanked the next two years ('07/'08 and '14/'15).
Payton left the Giants because Jim Fassel had stripped his play-calling duties when they were struggling in '02. Giants eventually made the playoffs, but the writing was on the wall for Payton. He landed in Dallas when Parcells got hired there. Fassel lasted one more year and got canned.

Ah okay. For some reason I thought it went higher than and there was tension between him and ownership or something

Depends. Giants have always had a clear line of demarcation between GM and head coach when it comes to player personnel. The GM has the final say with the Giants. Can Payton live with that arrangement if it stays in place? The Giants have done it that way since at least the late '70s when the late George Young took over as GM.
Payton probably has more power in New Orleans than he could have almost anywhere else. Loomis is a bean-counter and gets players Payton wants. He wouldn't necessarily get that veto power with the Giants. That's one of the things Payton has to weigh when deciding to leave New Orleans, whether it's for the Giants or any other team.

I read something in the NY papers (yesterday, maybe) that Giants ownership has always thought highly of Payton, and that they appreciated that he didn't bad-mouth anyone on the way out of the door when he left the Giants. So if that is true, then I don't think there's any tension between Payton and Giants ownership that would be an issue.
I think the bigger issue is the hierarchy when it comes to player personnel.

and the $8MM still owed on his contract and whether the saints allow him to break the terms of his current contract.

I've been saying for a while and have seen it speculated previously in media this is the one job Saban might take. Because of patience and understanding of the ownership coupled with a good QB situation.
Saban stays UA 95%
Goes to NYG 5%
Colts or elsewhere 0%
