The word is Matt House is the guy making defensive staff hires...

...and Steeples is one of House's hires. He's like the Frank Wilson of Missouri for what he did at De Smet, only he got snapped up by the Vikings before any of the local colleges could get him.
The interesting question will be who gets the defensive line job. There are a couple of coaches with the Chiefs who could factor in.
One is Terry Bradden, who's the assistant defensive line coach. The other is Donald D'Alesio, who's an unspecified defensive assistant. D'Alesio was at LSU as an analyst in 2020; Pelini brought him down here from Youngstown State where he had been the defensive coordinator and defensive line coach.
I'm not predicting either would get the job, but they're a couple of names that would make some sense.
I think you need a D-line coach with some regional recruiting ties, though.

I’m not saying House doesn’t have significant input, but in no way do I believe he is “making the hires”
He and Kelly have no history together. I doubt that level of trust or authority would be handed out at this point.
Doesn’t mean he won’t get his guys in there, but he’s just recommending them.

It would be fun to get Karl Dunbar back here, but I think that ship has probably sailed.

Another name: Inoke Brekterfield, who...
1. Was Pittsburgh's defensive line coach when House was DC there (he coached Aaron Donald);
2. Went with Paul Chryst to Wisconsin and coached with Aranda; and
3. Spent this past year as the defensive line coach at Vanderbilt under Clark Lea, who was DC at Notre Dame under Kelly.
Brekterfield took a job as Washington's defensive line coach a week or so ago, so that's a bit of a complication but I would imagine LSU can take a guy away from them if we really wanted to.

Steeples was rumored to be a candidate for Kelly's staff before the 2020 season. Kelly signed one of his players in 2020 and another signed with Ohio state in 2021 who ND went after. He's definitely a Kelly hire.

Steeples is a legitimate candidate for the job, but to our knowledge, an offer hasn't been made quite yet. It looks like Kelly is giving Mickens a little more time to make a decision. That said, this continues to truly look like a two-horse race. This interview is great for both parties. If Mickens says no, it's very possible Kelly can move quickly on Steeples, as I'm told things went very well during the interview process. If it doesn't work out, it's still a great opportunity for Steeples, as this interview will only help him moving forward regarding future opportunities.

Yeah man it’s all over Twitter that he has free reign on the defensive side of the ball.

Could be that they were of the same mind.
My guess is building a list of assistants was likely a big part of the pre-hiring conversation between Kelly and House.
But I'm told Steeples is a House hire. It certainly sounds like Kelly would actively support it, though.

I don’t believe that. He may be making suggestions, but the ultimate success of hires falls on Kelly, and Kelly understands this.

Kelly stated specifically when he was hired that his DC’s are totally in control of that side of the ball.

Hey man, what does your handle mean?
(Sitting here in my rocking chair with a blanket over my legs, it is sometimes difficult to figure out what you young whippersnappers mean when using an alphabet salad like that.)

Agreed.
And yeah not sure why OP is assuming this is a “House hire” given the interview process that almost brought him to ND with Kelly recently.
My guess is the HC and his DC, gasp, actually discussed things like this before he was hired and they are both on the same page about it.
Shocking, I know
Regardless, I’m loving the way this is being put together. That video of Steeples talking to his team is awesome. Guy is a rising star and future HC imo. Great addition.
