The case for Daronte Jones

Once O got out of the way, the defense vastly improved.
“The Tigers completely reshaped the identity of this defense from more 4-3 to 3-4 blitzing packages and were one of the best defenses in the SEC over the final month of the season.”
“LSU's defense allowed just 18.5 points per game over the final four games and an average of 299 in total yards allowed as well. Despite being depleted at a number of position groups, this unit played its best ball in arguably the last two years. The secondary, down to its third string options at some positions, was solid in coverage and didn't allow the big explosive plays down field.”
“Every defensive player the media talked to during that stretch mentioned how critical the change in scheme was and how it had Jones' fingerprints all over it.”
If not here, hope he gets another shot calling defenses.

I think Jones won a lot of our fans over by the season's end, don't think there will be many melts if he's retained. Of course if Kelly has someone better in mind and brings them in, we'll be on board as well.
Basically, trust in CBK's ability to hire a staff.

This is really interesting - the improvement in the defense after the bye week. We may never know but maybe Woody interviewed with Baker and Jones to find out what was happening after or prior to firing Coach O and they let him know O was holding them back and that they needed to change the scheme. Possibly Woody or O made the decision to get Baker more involved in the scheme as he has DC experience? Who knows but there was a seismic shift in decision making and it paid off. It will be interesting if BK keeps either Baker or Jones or both. BK will get to the bottom of it and will hire the best option, either internally or externally. Can't wait to see the outcome.

Do we actually know that O was in the way? Or is that just sort of speculating the obvious?

Which is the same PPG as Alabama during the same timeframe.

With Freeman out of the picture, I honestly think that we should give Jones one more year to see how things go. All signs are positive at this point. He had the defense playing very well in November, even with a lot of "starters" laying out.

I believe O mentioned he was in the game plan at the start of the season and then for Alabama game he basically let Jones do what he wanted. I could be wrong on part of that though.

The chances that Orgeron and Kelly both choose the exact same DC is slim to none. But he maybe a candidate to replace Odom at Arky.

Kevin coyle who was the lead defensive analyst put together those blitz packages and O asked Jones to install them.

Baker really transformed the LB play. Clark leads CFB in tackles and registered 14.5 TFLs and 5.5 sacks.
He should win the Butkus award. He's done statistically better than any other finalist.

I remember the bashing that was happening the first half of the season by us. Then a switch was flipped. BayouCowboy is right, the LB play has been great.
I'm not sure what happened, but the blitz packages have been spot on and caught teams off guard and doing this with so many injuries on the backside of the defense. The backups really stepped up. I missed the coverage of Stingley but I didn't miss his poor tackling at times.

We’re already paying him for next year so why not try him out if BK likes him.

I wouldn't say passionate but the defensive turnaround cant be understated.

I still don't think he's elite by any stretch. He was the 5th choice of a desperate man that we paid a premium for. I'd rather go out and get a more proven commodity vs. a that did solid for 3 whole weeks...but hey that's just me
he's definitely not worth the sudden campaign for

He could be a great coach, but where was his plan to install the blitz packages all offseason? Where were the in-game adjustments against Kentucky and UCLA?
D.Jones might be good one day but my guess is he'll be back in the NFL next season unless a smaller school picks him up. He isn't a huge recruiter on any of the targets either.

I downvoted because people can't start thinking this is common sense or acceptable. Kelly will find someone proven with the checkbook we have.
