People need to stop equating Frtiz's success at Tulane with Sumrall at Tulane. The guy who built up Tulane in 2022 & 2023 was Fritz. His teams at Tulane went 12-2 and 11-2 including winning a Cotton Bowl.

Sumrall has gone 9-5 and while 6-1 right now, his team has looked atrocious at times and nearly lost to teams that had no business within 20 points of them.

He may be a good coach in the long run, but people need to stop equating Tulane's 2022-2023 run with him. He was at Troy at the time in one of the weakest overall conferences in FBS. Did well there, but nothing at either stop to justify the LSU job.

Tulane is not LSU. Just like ULL is not LSU. We do not need to go there

He definitely needs to go to a mid tier p4 school before us. What he did at Troy was impressive but the Tulane resume isn’t anything special. I would not be happy with that hire

Jon Sumrall benefits from Pete Nakos articles and people who don’t actually watch Tulane

He’s good but Jesus Christ he’s not ready for LSU.

I would assume he goes to Arkansas or Ole Miss. someone in that tier

It just feels like a big gamble. Maybe it pays off, who knows. He is only in his 4th year as a HC. Guys like Kiffin actively coach in big games and have been around the block for a decade + now.

Willie Fritz's Tulane in 2023:

3-point win against 2-10 ECU
2-point win against 4-8 Tulsa
2-point win against 6-7 Rice
7-point win against 5-7 North Texas

Your point is stupid. Added parity in college football across the board has shown that there are close games every single week. Your team just got arse-blasted by a Texas A&M squad that barely beat Arkansas by 3-points. Even Auburn beat Arkansas by a bigger margin.

Furthermore, its the Transfer Portal era. All of Fritz's players are likely gone at this point. Tulane is a program that is going to get picked over by bigger teams for their talent. As proven by the fact that they lost their star QB from last season to Duke.

The argument that you don't get credit because someone else "built the program" means considerably less now that your entire roster can just up and leave in one offseason. Tulane's current QB was playing for BYU last season. He wasn't recruited or coached by Willie Fritz.

Yeah Fritz is the one that did the heavy lifting.

He was 9-5 at Tulane last year. That is a fact. That is what he accomplished. Lost to the only ranked team he played that season.

He is 6-1 this year and got destroyed in his one loss against Ole Miss. Has lost to the only ranked team they played again this season.

The point is that he didn't rebuild a team from some dumpster fire like some are trying to portray. Even Fritz took a while to get Tulane going.

He may end up a great coach, but he has not proven anywhere close enough to even be a fallback consideration for LSU.

Yes, 9-5 in the first year installing new systems on both offense and defense and learning your roster. Players leaving and new players coming in. Its called a transitionary period, genius. How did Kalen DeBoer look in year 1 at Alabama after inheriting Saban's elite program?

Wow, he got destroyed by Ole Miss. Were they expected to win that game? What an idiotic attempt at a point. So he is only qualified if he somehow found a way to upset Ole Miss with ~1/4th the talent?

Willie Fritz also got destroyed by Ole Miss, by the way. 37-20 in 2023.

So what if he didn't "rebuild a team from a dumpster fire"? He did exactly that at his previous job (Troy) so he has done this once before. Tulane has had massive roster turnover since Fritz left. That is the norm with the transfer portal, and it is something you need to cognizant about when evaluating coaches.

By the way, continuing success at a program after the guy who "built it" leaves is hardly a given. Louisiana is 25-24 overall since Billy Napier left. A program like Tulane can completely collapse within 1-year of someone like Fritz leaving if they hire the wrong coach. Louisiana is an example of that.

You're wrong. Neal Brown was the HC when Troy beat LSU, but I would put both of Sumrall's Troy teams up against LSU just like I would Brown's. I think its funny how all you LSU people crap on Troy but yall won't even honor the terms of the contract and come play at Troy.

Someone that is thinking logically lol their even close games all over college football this year so using that as a point agaisnt a candidate is baffling . Sumrall has actually only had 5 returning starters from his year 1 team at Tulane so his fritz point holds no weight

Yep that really worked out for LSU hiring that proven HC

Funny Brian and Sunbelt Billy were hired and fired in the same year

From Google

quote:

Upon arriving at Tulane, head coach Jon Sumrall faced a massive roster overhaul, having to replace nearly 60 players who had either entered the transfer portal or graduated after the 2024 season. This roster turnover was largely due to the departure of his predecessor, Willie Fritz, for Houston.

Prominent players Sumrall had to replace include:

Quarterback: The most high-profile departure was quarterback Darian Mensah, a four-star prospect who transferred to Duke and was reportedly offered a $4 million-per-year NIL deal. Mensah's exit left a significant hole at the position.

Running Back: Two-time 1,000-yard rusher Makhi Hughes left for Oregon.

Receivers: The top four receivers from the previous season all departed.

Other key positions: Sumrall also had to replace the starting tight end (Alex Bauman, who went to Miami), the punter (Will Karoll), and other key players.

In response to the exodus, Sumrall immediately turned to the transfer portal to rebuild his roster, bringing in 60 new players and only having five returning starters for the 2025 season. Among the new additions was quarterback Jake Retzlaff from BYU.
