This is a such a passive mentality. If you are going to make a change, have a plan and execute. If Alleva and co. has a Miles replacement in mind, someone that has Tiger roots, then make the change.

History is littered with NFL and College teams that thought they needed to make a change for change sake and ended up in much worse shape.

"Sometimes You Need To Change" is the 50 year old guy that divorces his wife thinking he is going to have a chance at Jennifer Lawrence, but only ends up sleeping with Mama June.

Also a good post. I think most reasonable fans are pretty torn. He's better than most, but we're still not sure he's up to the challenge of taking us back up to that championship tier.

I agree with a lot of what you said. I actually like Miles and part of me would be disappointed to see him go, but a move like this may be better for both moving forward. It would actually make me happy to see him close our his great coaching career at the place we all know he has always dreamed of coaching. I would cheer for Michigan while Miles coached there. I have no ill will towards Miles and would actually rather see Miles leave on a good note rather than have a few more subpar years and be forced out. I respect what Miles has done for LSU and am very thankful, but I think this would be a happy ending for all. Miles gets his dream job and LSU gets a young rejuvenated coach to take over the loads of talent we have.

The good thing is LSU wont have to make the choice, its up to Miles. So its not like we'd be firing him and regretting it later.

It would be very interesting in this regard:
-would Miles be able to recruit as well at UM? or is LSU selling itself these days?
-Would he be able to rebuild them? i'd be a fan and wish him the best
-Would he have the same clock management/play calling issues at another school
-would LSU be able to find a competent replacement?
-Could somebodyu else get more out of LSU's talent?
-Could the next guy recruit as well as Miles, or would we start getting pillaged by other schools again, like the 90's?

Im a firm believer that college football is about 80% recruiting, and you can go 9-3 or 10-2 every year by just recruiting well. That's what concerns me. Im certain, LSu could find a better x's and o's play caller, but doubtful another guy could recruit as well.

Miles would be able to recruit to Michigan just fine. His players love him. Plus, he's proven he can go out of state when necessary. LSU doesn't sell itself to recruits any better or worse than Michigan does -- despite their recent troubles they are a blue blood of the CFB world (some may argue they are the blue blood of the CFB world).

Agree with that, except LSU has won and played for National Titles in recent memory. UM hasnt won a NC in any of these recruits' lifetimes.

At least in Louisiana, LSu is still selling itself. It would take a few more down years to totally lose that. im not sure Michigan still has that any more than Notre Dame, Nebraska, etc. Recruits want to go to winning programs, not programs that were winning when their parents were kids.

I get frustrated with Les a number of times each season. Yes, he does need to evaluate his decisions over the past 5 years. Particularly those in the BCS game versus Bama and Arkansas this year.

However, he is a class person and has represented LSU well. Regardless of the LSU fan base believing every coach will apply for the head coaching position. This will not be the case. Texas last year and Florida this year as real good examples.

Give Les the respect that he's due. Make him feel appreciated and pray he improves his weaknesses. He does have strengths to build on.

Very, very good post DeltaDoc. I am firmly in your camp and fully agree and accept the repercussions (good or bad) if Miles leaves (I hope he does).

If it weren't for fallout where recruiting is concerned - for '15 commits/prospects and the '16 class - I would say 'go home, Les'.

Otherwise, I think he needs to stay at least through LF's tenure at LSU.

The upvote vs downvote tally in this thread is really surprising to me.

Thats a very logical thought process

The OP is the opposite of logical. The OP admits that he holds onto the "hope" of better things post-Les Miles.

The theme here seems to boil down to "we love Les the man, but we think he can only beat Saban now and then".

It's the Same type theme as Charlie Mac and the Bear was.

Good points. I mean look what dumping coaches every few years has done for Michigan, Notre Dame, USCw,
etc. There are so many really great coaches out there that it is no problem getting the next one.

There should be fan pi$$-off clause in every coach's contract. When clueless fans begin to complain because they don't like something about how the team is run the coach needs to be fired. That will show him who the real bosses are.

Add to that a championship clause that says that any coach that goes more than two years without a championship should be fired. That should add all the incentive needed to make sure the coaches toe the line.

I just don't think LSU is willing to take that chance though.

This isn't a game. It's a multi-million dollar industry. You don't "roll the dice" when you have a proven winner...not when there is absolutely zero surety that the next guy can make the big whigs as much money.

As such, I for one, am willing to roll the dice and hope that he leaves for Michigan. In so doing, I recognize and accept that things could get much worse. I am okay with that prospect, for there is also the hope for something better as well. I think LSU needs a change of pace, direction and heart. I can live with the results, either way because I do not think Les Miles can or will win another national championship here. I think someone else could.

That's a pretty level headed viewpoint. The majority of the fanbase will not acknowledge LSU coming out worse post-Miles as a real possibility though.

However I'd like to echo what the poster above me just said. This is not a game. This is business, and business is good right now. Miles is winning and LSU is making money right now. They aren't going to just throw that away. The upside really isn't that much higher than it is right now, because Miles is winning a lot whether people want to admit it or not. The downside is tremendous though and not a place LSU fans want to go back to.

I remember the utter incompetence of Mike Archer, Curley Hallman, and Gerry DiNardo while at LSU.

I remember them too, but there is one thing that you forget.

This whole chain of LSU's coaching carousel would not have happened but for one mysterious event.
That being Bo Rein's plane going down.

LSU's version of Lloyd Carr.

Another great example. how is Michigan doing without Lloyd Carr?

Can anyone think of an example where a National Championship winning coach, with a great overall record was successfully replaced?

I guess maybe Bowden? But he was 80 years old, and was there 33 years. However that hire would look a lot different today if the Tallahassee PD decided they cared about rape.
