I fall into the camp relative to Miles that he frustrates me to no end at times, but I fully respect his recruiting and ability to win (relatively speaking) over an extended period of time like no other coach at LSU.

I also realize that perception of Miles would be different if Saban had not come back to Alabama. LSU likely would have another national title under Miles and maybe another SEC title or two as well.

That said, I feel like both LSU and Miles could use a re-birth. Sometimes you have to tear something down for the greater good.

Miles is aging and I do not foresee him getting better with age. To the contrary, I think things may get worse. At the moment, since 2011, LSU seems to be treading water - not getting better for sure, not get much worse.

People have a tendency to get complacent, even when they don't want to or ever realize it. I think Miles is complacent and aging at the moment. That combo does not bode well for LSU.

As such, I for one, am willing to roll the dice and hope that he leaves for Michigan. In so doing, I recognize and accept that things could get much worse. I am okay with that prospect, for there is also the hope for something better as well. I think LSU needs a change of pace, direction and heart. I can live with the results, either way because I do not think Les Miles can or will win another national championship here. I think someone else could.

Steps off of soapbox...

I agree with everything you say Doc. Its just you are more diplomatic about how you go about complimenting Les for his work at LSU. I also am ready to move on from Les even if it does get worse. I just don't think LSU is willing to take that chance though.

I don't know him or his family dynamic, but I do know that "home" sometimes trumps what are otherwise more logical decisions. It certainly has been the case in my life and the lives of other professionals I know as well.

Agree with OP. Think Miles to Michigan would be a good move for both parties, personally.

This is a such a passive mentality. If you are going to make a change, have a plan and execute. If Alleva and co. has a Miles replacement in mind, someone that has Tiger roots, then make the change.

History is littered with NFL and College teams that thought they needed to make a change for change sake and ended up in much worse shape.

"Sometimes You Need To Change" is the 50 year old guy that divorces his wife thinking he is going to have a chance at Jennifer Lawrence, but only ends up sleeping with Mama June.

I remember the utter incompetence of Mike Archer, Curley Hallman, and Gerry DiNardo while at LSU. I am not willing to give up what Miles brings us now for what some new HC MIGHT bring to LSU. I like going int every game knowing that LSU could well win it.

I just think Miles is at LSU as long as Saban is at Bama.

No doubt. I have been an LSU fans for decades. I have seen bad, bad times. I have seen good times.

For me personally, and everyone is different, I enjoy LSU football more when we are on the rise than any other time (including when we have been the #1 rated team in the nation for weeks on end).

I don't think LSU will experience many, if any, more rises under Miles. The program kinda is what it is right now...supremely talented, wealthy, oft times poorly offensively coached and with a relative inability to overcome its primary in-division rival in Alabama, and with other programs closing the gap.

The program is a mirror image of Miles.

I am personally ready for a change and know it could get much worse. I realize the replacement to Miles may be replaced before the next star coach is on campus.

I can live with that personally - but that is me and my preferences.

As a note towards Miles, I am tired of seeing seemingly unprepared teams. It seems that the team is only truly focused one or two games per year (this year it was OM and Bama).

People said the same things about RC around 1999-2000.

Then we got Fran.

On that note, I totally agree with you Delta, LSU needs a change. I hear Gary Barnett is free.

My fear: Miles is going to stay on and become LSU's version of Lloyd Carr. He'll be solid and win the games he should and be competitive in some of the ones he shouldn't, but the game will (and has started to) pass him by. At the end of every year, he'll have fielded a "solid" team, and we'll be looking back at 3 or 4 losses and saying, "but we were so close to beating so and so...". The LSU brass will keep him longer than they should because of past accomplishments and because he's an affable guy.

But I'm sorry and with the utmost respect to Miles but, "almost winning" doesn't get us back to Atlanta or in the playoffs. I'll be happy for change and wish him well should he decide to go to Michigan, and I'll be happy if he stays here a few more years before retiring, but I DO NOT want him to coach until LSU's brand and program is so watered down we become a turnstile for coaches after he leaves like Michigan has become and Bama was before Saban.

I agree with what you said. I personally think both parties would benefit. Miles vs Meyer would be Classic in the B1G.

I also think that a change would rejuvenate the LSU side.

Exactly.

What is a good rule of thumb in one area of life does not make it a parable for all areas of life.

Moreover, if Miles stays, I am fine with that also...to a point. I do think if he stays, his decisions moving forward should be critically judged by Alleva and the LSU leadership.

LSU football is dangerously close to be surpassed completely by Auburn and even teams like Ole Miss and Texas A&M (if they hire a competent DC).

If we are going to go backwards or stay the same, we might as well do it with some new blood.

Thoughtful post from top to bottom. Because three other big-name programs are currently coach-hunting, I'm now leaning more toward wanting him to stay. Still, I honestly think he's peaked at LSU. You penned most of my thoughts more clearly than I could have.

The good thing is LSU wont have to make the choice, its up to Miles. So its not like we'd be firing him and regretting it later.

It would be very interesting in this regard:
-would Miles be able to recruit as well at UM? or is LSU selling itself these days?
-Would he be able to rebuild them? i'd be a fan and wish him the best
-Would he have the same clock management/play calling issues at another school
-would LSU be able to find a competent replacement?
-Could somebodyu else get more out of LSU's talent?
-Could the next guy recruit as well as Miles, or would we start getting pillaged by other schools again, like the 90's?

Im a firm believer that college football is about 80% recruiting, and you can go 9-3 or 10-2 every year by just recruiting well. That's what concerns me. Im certain, LSu could find a better x's and o's play caller, but doubtful many other coaches could recruit as well.
