He wins.... he fell out of the manlove scene, replaced by Kiffin and Riley. Personally I think the numbers being thrown around for college coaches is bordering on the absurd nowadays.

his talks on building a culture... as strong a talk on leadership as i've ever seen. impressive guy.

The consensus on this board when we hired Orgeron was that Fleck didn't have enough experience, well now he does and he has proven himself at a high level. He is still young enough and not one of those over rated has been "splash hires". I would be pumped up if we hired Fleck.

I keep hearing that on this board that he is a weirdo. What about him makes him a "loon"?

PJ Fleck is Big 10 Butch Jones. No thanks.
I don't understand the upvotes for this post. Butch Jones had success at solid programs he inherited from Brian Kelly. He maxed out at 9 wins when he got to Tennessee.
Fleck built Western freaking Michigan into a Cotton Bowl team, and had an 11-win season at Minnesota. He has more skins on the wall at historically tough jobs than some of this board's favorites.

Fleck is a great coach, just seems cringe. Especially the dumbass row the boat thing.

Dude is a DAMN good coach in my opinion.
The only thing that I don't like is that he's another "personality", "motivator", CEO type, and we've gone through two larger than life personalities that weren't masters of one side of the ball.
Never been a Coordinator, never called plays to my knowledge.
Those type of guys can be real effective, but we've just gone through like 17 years of very similar guys. Although Fleck is a lot smarter than both.

I think many on this board delude themselves as to how big of a challenge the next coach will have. It's not just a plug in of some great mastermind at scheme and all will be OK. Orgeron has fricked things up pretty good and the losses of people to transfers, etc are significant.
You are going to need a mutha fukka to come in and reestablish order. I'm not sure any of the flavors mentioned short of maybe Tucker have that in them. and I have reservations about Tucker. Kiffin is a train wreck ready to happen. Franklin is just meh. Fisher will stay put where he is...I would not leave A & M if I were him, the money is too good plus on the negative side, what has happened to FSU since his national championship still leaves a lot of questions because they were falling off before he left. Riley has not proved anything other than he has been able to continue Stoops' legacy. He has not built anything nor has he had to deal with a rebuild. Not shilling for Fleck, but you will need someone who knows how to build. Fickell has a unique situation at Cincinnati but I think he stays put if he gets into the playoff....and I don't see him missing it unless the powers that be frick him on the playoff committee. Napier has produced strong results at ULL, but I think TCU may be his landing spot. Patterson's resignation throws a fly into the ointment and if Mullen gets the dreaded vote of confidence then the entire landscape changes, Florida can be just as attractive as LSU or USC. Don't leave Miami out of the equation even though they beat Pitt.

PJ Fleck has the Golden Gophers at 6-2
He has turned around both the programs he has been HC at. Two in a row, row the boat, Western Michigan and now at Minnesota. Western Michigan: 1-11, 8-5, 8-5, and 13-1.
Minnesota: 5-7, 7-6, 11-1, 4-3 (covid year, throw out results), and now 6-2. He is 40 years old. Has NFL playing experience and NFL coaching experience. It is crazy that his name doesn't get thrown around more on here, perhaps it is because he "doesn't talk like us". Remember, Saban didn't talk like us either.

Fleck rips off 3 out of the next 4, what would be your beef?
I don’t want fleck because I’m tired of the motivator ceo model with no set in stone philosophy and revolving doors of coordinators who know more than the head coach.
Doesn’t mean it can’t work (see LSU 2019, Clemson, les miles years)
Just that year in year out it’s too variable, difficult to sustain and I’m tired of the massive peaks and valleys

I'm not sure you are not describing most D 1 coaches. You are going to need a guy who knows how to rebuild. What has been going on at LSU is not a reload circumstance. It is also extremely cultural and until you stabilize the culture the next coach will struggle. You basically had a player revolt last year and the effects of that are lingering. You are going to need a strong personality who gets a minimum of 4-5 years commitment from the Administration .

I just can’t tell if he’s a gimmick or a great coach.
He clearly is good at building a program, but can he be consistent long term or will kids get tired of the row the boat shite?
Does that shite work when he isn’t coaching a bunch of under dog/over achiever types?
Idk.
If he loses to Iowa and Wisconsin his record
Sorta sucks this year.

Let’s take the most consistent top coaches over the last 4-5 years. 4/5 were gurus on one side of the ball and called plays
Dabo is a motivator (look at this year)
Other than him
Saban-defense
Ryan day-offense
Lincoln Riley-offense
Kirby-defense

Fleck has the best resume of any presumed candidate not named Matt Rhule. But he wears a sweater thing, and he’s excitable, and “row the boat” isnt a very sexy sounding mantra, durp etc., durp etc.

The previous 4 years for the Gophers:
2016: 9-4
2015: 6-7
2014: 8-5
2013: 8-5
He's had 1 really good year at Minnesota and this season. His best win this year is a 7 point win over 5-3 Purdue with a low point of losing to a 30+ point underdog Bowling Green. He should finish well though because the B10 West is really weak this season.
He's a good coach, but you get another HC that has never been a coordinator. He'll be as good as his staff hires.

Why is a loon? People say this vaguely in every thread without specifics.
