A handful of college coaches are drawing interest for NFL head coaching jobs, and here’s an interesting one: Minnesota’s P.J. Fleck. I’m told at least one team wants to interview Fleck, 40, who’s one of the only current FBS head coaches to both play and coach in the NFL.

I wouldn’t say he’s proven all the hype true, but he’s at least been a success moving up. Minnesota isn’t the easiest job. There’s not a huge recruiting base that doesn’t require a lot of competition with bigger names and they don’t have the fan support that Michigan, OSU and PSU have. How many times have we seen someone win there consistently over a long period, much less make a play for a division/conference title.

I know Minn had an off year this year, but the Big 10 and PAC 10 were clusterfricks. PSU had a terrible season too and we know Franklin can coach. Out of all the G5 guys that moved up around the same time (Herman, Frost, Fuente, Brohm), Fleck is one of the few who has found any real success, with Matt Ruhle being the other. You don’t win at a place like Minnesota if you are nothing but cliches.

His general personality, aside from his coaching ability, will not go over well in an NFL locker room.

Just my opinion.

More proof how screwed up the NFL is if they think this flake is the answer.

He’d be a good hire. I know some make fun of the “row the boat” monicker, but he is a damn good coach.

He took Minnesota to their best season in like 50 years in 2019. He took Western Michigan from 1-11 to 8-5 to 8-5 to 13-1.

He may or may not be a better college coach than NFL coach, but he is on no way just cliches and gimmicks. Unless you count historic success at two programs a gimmick.

The hate this dude gets on TD is just mind bogging.

He has taken two programs to more success than they have had since either ever or the freaking early 1900s and these people think he is just a gimmick.

Good coaches use gimmicks to their advantage and he is a damn good coach. Sean Payton is constantly using lockerroom gimmicks.

Let's see.

He took Western Michigan, a program that has been around since the 1960s and has NEVER won double digit games from 1-11 to 13-1.

Then he took Minnesota a historically 3rd class Big 10 team that no one wants to play for or gives a shite about to their most wins since 1904. NINETEEN ZERO FOUR.

There's only one way to judge a coach and that is a pretty damn good way.

I don't understand the downvotes. I'm a huge Fleck guy and agree he would be a disaster in the NFL. His strengths are recruiting and motivation - how would that go over in a locker room full of millionaire adult men?

People are going to be so mad when he comes out in two years with an LSU oar at his presser but once he takes the oar to bama everyone will be rowing with them.
