Ok, so Zach Arnett is interviewing today. And might absolutely be the hire.. O could be saying a couple weeks to misdirect after being so transparent with Freeman.(I do believe O thought he had Freeman all wrapped up.)

I'll be honest, if they really like Arnett today, I think they should hire him. You can't wait on Nielsen. The way the Saints defense is playing right now(all year), if they reach the NFC Championship game or Super Bowl.. That guy is going to be a hot commodity for a NFL DC position. Brady knows him. Fontenot knows him. Falcons fit.

Both could be awesome DCs for us, with Neilson being more high risk high reward. But if Arnett is on board this week then you absolutely move on him.

I almost think you are correct.

Even 24/7 folks are all ho hum about this Arnette interview not going anywhere.

Sounds like LSU is feeding out false info to keep the deal from being spoiled.

You have to wonder if O could lure Nielsen back to college.

You have to imagine they have a good relationship.

O was his position coach at USC.
O gave him his first P5 coaching job at Ole Miss in 2005.

I am Pretty surprised Nielsen wasn’t our DL coach in 2017 going to the Saints.

You don’t charter a jet to pick up someone if it’s “just a conversation” IMO. Definitely seems like they’re downplaying it

Nielsen will be a great DC. But, he may bypass college completely. His line is wrecking shop. What he has done with Trey Hendrickson alone is just magical.

O was way too transparent with Freeman. He was confident(over-confident) with his remarks on OTB.

Something that stood out that he let slip this morning was his mentioning of being multiple. That is Arnett, not Nielsen.

Both make great hires, but(I believe) LSU will be competing with the NFL for Nielsen.

Well.. he built Sad Diego State into a top 5 defensive team in the country.

He moved Miss St from the bottom tier to the top tier in the SEC in his first year there.

I have Nielson as a solid #1, mainly bc of scheme, and Arnett as a solid #2. I’d imagine considering O’s relationship with Nielson(he was his DL coach at Ole Miss and practically got him the job with the Saints) that O knows at this point if he can or cannot get Nielson. So I’d imagine if Arnett is named DC in the next day or two it’s bc O knew Nielson was off the table.

Yea, there is no mystery with Nielsen. He and Orgeron go way back, so they can have informal conversations and say yay/nay.

If Nielsen wasn't interested, he would tell Orgeron on the front end to move on.

Mississippi State defenses seemed pretty decent the last several years. I'm not sure where they ranked, but we had a really hard time against them in 2018 and in 2019 they played us about as well as anyone.

I think Nielsen doesn't even know if he is on or off the table at this point. But I agree, he agent has been contacted at this point.

There are 6 opening in the NFL if I'm counting right. That means at least 6 coordinator positions are up in the air, likely more.

Nielsen has designed and built the 2nd best defensive line in the NFL. The only reason it's not #1 is because Aaron Donald plays on a different team.

He will get interviews no matter what this offseason. He is a dark horse that is getting darker.

A lot of that team is playing in the NFL. Their defense coordinator is gone.

Zach was dealing with a rebuild. And it already started to ascend.

Keep this in mind: Leach is a fantastic offensive mind. He picked a Defensive Coordinator that could slow down a modern offense.

I think that says something.

Freeman called O that morning and told him he was coming, then it leaked out, and then he changed his mind, for whatever reason

Didn't think about that Iowa but that is a great point. The main reason I want Arnett is because his scheme performs well against the spread and other pass heavy offenses. Kind of the opposite of Pellini's ha.

To be fair, he's playing opposite of Cam Jordan. Then there's Rankins...I mean, SOMEBODY is gonna get the one-on-one matchup. Granted, Hendrickson is winning it but I gotta believe alot of his success is based on those factors.

And I'm a huge fan of both Nielson and Hendrickson fwiw. Not trying to downplay either one.

That very well may be the case. Do we know if O/LSU have had any substantial talks with Nielsen? I'd also be curious how confident LSU is that if they do want Arnett that they could sign him.

I see benefits in both guys. Just hoping we can hurry up and seal the deal.

I honestly like Arnett better than Freeman. He's white though, so the hire is not as trendy. Just being real.
