I have Nielson as a solid #1, mainly bc of scheme

Just curious, but what do you know about Nielson's defensive schemes?

There's no way to know for sure, but they are close so the talks could be informal/one-on-one.

Orgeron was his position coach in college and gave him a job at Ole Miss.

He's assuming that Nielsen will run the current Dennis Allen defense which is a 4-2-5/5-1-5 Under, pretty attacking defense that Allen has perfected.

That very well may be the case. Do we know if O/LSU have had any substantial talks with Nielsen?

This.

Everyone keeps acting like LSU has to wait till Saints season is over to even interview Nielsen. That's not true. Hell, Aaron Glenn (Saints secondary coach) is interviewing for NFL HC jobs right now.

If Nielsen were that heavily interested in the position, then he could interview with LSU and tell them I'll take it, but want to finish my season with the Saints. LSU isn't in so much of a rush that they wouldn't wait on that. But if Nielsen is saying I want to wait till after season, then that means he is either not that interested or he thinks he is going to get looks for NFL DC positions and wants to delay till he sees what all of his offers are. And if that is the case, then LSU needs to move on Arnett.

Well.. he built Sad Diego State into a top 5 defensive team in the country.
They played consistently good defense under Rocky Long. They were 5, 11, and 11 in the three years before he took over. It doesn’t mean he can’t coach and that it should be discounted, but it does mean he was part of a program built on strong defense and wasn’t working from scratch.

This worries me too. If this is the conversation then we are setting ourselves up to get burned.

Another worry is that Arnett is still on the short list of DC candidates at TX and other schools. If we have the opportunity to pull the trigger this week, then we shouldn't wait.

Or Oregon if he wants to go back west. Eugene has a beautiful campus and great facilities. Not a bad place to live either.

True. I think LSU would serve as a bigger stepping stone to a HC role than Oregon though. Plus he just spent one year in the SEC. Staying in the same conference but with a better city, more pay and better players seems enticing.

was MSU that good this year?

They gave up 100 fewer yards per game than we did. MSU lost 7 starters on defense and went from #73 total defense last year to #53 this year. He has them going in the right direction after one year.

Dan Campbell just interviewed for the Lions job.

There doesn’t seem to be a prohibition against assistants interviewing during the playoffs

Honestly, it's a win with either of these guys. Both are young and have high ceilings. There are still risks as neither of them are at the Venables level but they are guys you can take a chance with and feel good.
