why is he being a prick about this?

I even get Payton being pissy...I just don't get how the Saints can stop a man from accepting a job that has no direct connection to the one he's leaving.

But I get him being a prick, I mean Brees is done, you're losing an asst. GM, losing a great D coach, and lost Brady who is now coaching AGAINST you in the same division...so I understand the salty demeanor.

if there is a non-compete issue, via court injunction

Then Payton can find another DC, just like we are always having to do.

We can just buy Nielsen out of that contract and Payton can go screw himself, right? Payton is a lot bigger douche than I previously thought he was.

There was probably language written into his contract since it’s still technically the same industry.

The only way that works was if there was an NCAA clause in it - regardless of it being the same industry, but I can't imagine a buyout clause being that high for a D-line coach.

I get what you're saying here, and man would that be some petulant behavior from the Saints to go after LSU because Brady hopped town after one year.

Which is what he wants LSU to do. This will all get resolved and once again be a bad look for the Saints.

I'm saying that the Saints will rightfully want compensation for him breaking his contract, just like he'd want compensation if he got fired.

I imagine this will get resolved.

I think we are in agreement.

If the wording therein is very specific regarding territory, term etc, they most certainly can be enforced if the employee signed it. There is a petty arse company right here in BR that has a room full of attorneys that do it on the reg.

I’d imagine it has to with O going after the guy that would’ve become the DC after Dennis Allen got another head job in a year.

Soooooo.... Make a counter offer to Nielsen.

How would NCAA/NFL be a non-compete issue?

His leaving the NFL and working for a school in the NCAA would have no financial impact to the Saints.

In all fairness to the Saints, Nielson is worth fighting for.

This will be yet another nail-in-the-coffin for the Saints' Golden Era, and I can understand their reluctance to let go.

But they are about to slip into medicrity, so release Nielsen and start your arduous rebuild, Loomis.

I have never seen one that has not been able to be enforced (made the person stay). Money talks.

Do you really think O is just sitting in his office handling these negotiations 1:1?

Two things:

1. I doubt Payton is holding this up, this is coming from lawyers and people who work contracts. Not the head coach.

2. The saints want compensation, that’s the way this works. This is twice now Ed has come for their staff. I know it’s not popular, but it’s not the saints job to just allow Ed to raid their coaches. They want to be compensated just like any business.

theoretically, all they'd have to do is restrict him from being a football coach in a set number of parishes (of which EBR would be listed) and it's applicable. why would the NFL/NCAA distinction matter?

that would be an issue for damages on a breach

non-competes allow injunctions, which are something different

I think O sets the tone for the program and makes the hiring decisions. So far, he has sucked. We will see how everything pans out.

This looks to be another goober move. Failing to consult with the organization before approaching the person.

The whole situation seems to be handled by imbeciles with little business sense.
