My only concern with Aranda - or any HC with a DC is 3-4/3-3-5

The players we've recruited particularly on the D line Roy, Guillory, Smith, Saivion, Jackson, BJ, Carter, Langston were all based on 4-3
I don't personally care what front we run but you do have to have the right personnel to be successful (or recruit the right players for your scheme).
I think we can all agree Dline is by far our youngest yet loaded group right now (bright futures)
Do you think some of them of we'll adjust to a new scheme or will we be looking at transfers (which would suck).
Also for those saying Daronte should stay (which I think he's earned been super impressive) he runs a 4-2-5 front mostly and that's what Zimmer runs so it could be possible he's not the best fit for Aranda or a new HC that wants a 3 front. Just something to consider.
Either way I don't think this should be a huge qualifier for the HC position just stating it would suck to lose any of our young guys to the portal.

I would argue Roy and Maason fit best at 3-4 DE, ojulari and Webb at 3-4 OLB, and guillory can play nose

Aranda did this before at LSU. He transitioned us to 3-5. He can do it again.

Aranda came into a similar situation his first year as DC at LSU anyway. He figured it out just fine.

And his first year we gave up the fewest touchdowns in the country.

I would trust Dave to be able to figure it out

Tamp down your expectations for the first three years of any coach you hire. hire the right coach based off what he does and not what talent you have now.
The portal expedites talent to a coach anyway. But by all means, if coach —-fill in the blank—— is the right coach, hire him.
If he can recruit to his scheme well, then that’s what will win. But f he can’t, then he’s not the right coach.

I had forgotten about that part. Even better.

You realize the last 2 games they have been in a 3-4 scheme?

It’s like some of your forget that we gave up 500 yards and 42 points to Kentucky.

I'm pretty sure multiple times the last couple weeks we had Baskerville, Jones and Clark on field at LB. Also, in a 3-4 BJ would be a logical transition to a 3-4 LB. He has the speed and agility.
We were supposed to be playing multiple formations all along instead of obsessing with one style over another. Daronte being a new DC would make for a logical choice to do that with his 4-3 knowledge and Dave's 3-4.

You overrate the differences and underrate their talent.

That was back in the 4-man front days of Orgeron's D.

Aranda already ran a hybrid scheme when he first came to LSU. He's not an idiot. He knows how to build a defensive scheme around player strengths unlike the meathead we have now.
I think Aranda would be a great hire but I personally prefer an offensive guru over a defensive one. NCAA is too built around offense right now and it's better you don't want to have to replace a great OC every year.

Guys like Guillory, Bj, Carter would definitely benefit from a switch to a 3 man front.
My concern is if Smith and Roy want to eat blocks.
That being said, Roy has looked really good in a 3 man front the last couple of games and has gotten after the QB
So maybe they both stay.
Roy Guillory Smith on the DL with BJ at BOLB is scary

You actually make the argument for a defensive mind. The number of prolific offenses is at an all time high whether it’s due to rule changes, scheme changes etc. Most any serious college football fan can rattle off 15 solid offenses that would produce reasonable offensive minds/OCs. The top shelf defensive pool is much much smaller. Trying to hit on a DC every couple years is much more difficult which makes having a defensive minded head coach with an ingrained philosophy arguably more valuable.

LSU was a long time 4-3 when Aranda arrived. He tried to implement more of a 3-4 scheme early on (having a guy like Arden Key drop in coverage), but quickly realized the personnel wasn't quite ready for the change. So HE changed. And in the process Key, rushing from more of a 4-3 look, set the LSU single season record for sacks. Aranda's change to the 3-4 was gradual.
On the other hand, captain caveman HC hated Aranda's defense because the DL were more of "bit players" rather than disrupters. So O implemented HIS defense...which IMMEDIATELY took a program that had traditionally been one of the better defensive teams for two decades to the worst defensive team in school history. This year wasn't all that much better UNTIL....the DC was allowed to move back to more of a 3-4 look with blitzes. Low and behold LSU has looked like one of the best defensive teams in the country the last two weeks. Especially considering they are playing mostly second team guys.
A smart DC (like Aranda) could figure out his personnel and adjust accordingly until he can recruit to the style he wants. Just because Oregron is a football moron doesn't mean other coaches can't figure things out.

quote:Iron sharpens iron. A strong defense makes the offense better. Not as much the other way. If the defense isn't very good, having an offense picking them apart every day in paractice doesn't help so much. When an offense has to fight for every yard and every catch in practice however, it definitely helps them against weaker opponents.

It's tough not to point out the obvious, but the most dominant program in recent times is rooted in defense. Also TBH, Venables probably has more to do with Dabo's success than Dabo does.
