First off, let's set aside the ludicrous assumption that you should base a HC hiring on current roster personnel and just focus on your characterization of that personnel...
Roy and Guillory are probably better suited for 4-3 DT, but I don't think it's the slightest bit unreasonable to suggest that they could hold down NT in a 3-4. Further, we've seen that Aranda is perfectly happy with using 3 DT types to man his front in a 3-4 (see 2019, when rashard lawrence and glen logan were nominally DEs). So Roy and Guillory would be fine.
Next we move to Smith. Smith can play anywhere on a 3-4 front. Hell, he's played both DT and DE in a 4-3 this year. If he can do that (as a true freshman no less) he can provide value anywhere along an odd front.
In my estimation, savion's body type is basically the prototype 3-4 DE. He might actually be better suited for that than for a 4-3.
Landon Jackson, to me, is a prototype SDE in a 4-3. Luckily, that type of guy can easily fit into a 3-4. He may a very slightly worse fit, but it is nowhere near being untenable.
These are dudes who are very clearly *better* suited for a 3-4 than for a 4-3. Both of these guys are prototype 3-4 EDGE rushers. These are players who would *gain* value by a switch to a 3-4.
Langston is the exact prototype for a 3-4 DE. That DT/DE tweener body type is exactly what you want. Perfect fit for a 3-4.
So what you're left with is a handful of guys who are basically neutral in terms of fitting in 4-3 versus 3-4, and a handful of guys who are better fits for a 3-4 than a 4-3.
Bottom line: this is one of the silliest worries i've seen. Especially given the extent to which Aranda has proven to be able to cater to his personnel.

Right? WTF is this thread?

In this day and age it's much easier to find a top notch OC/offensive mind than a top end DC/defensive mind. Having a great defensive coach as head coach is in no way a bad thing.

It’s not about can Roy and Smith play in a 3-4
Will they want to?
Aranda hasn’t had a Fl drafted higher than the 3rd round and outside the NT position you have to admit our DL recruiting tanked while he was here.
Aranda said Lawrence could have wracked up stats but was disciplined and played his part. What recruit wants to hear that?

What defense do you think Alabama and UGA are running? Funny how they have such an issue with DL recruits.

2017
Tyler Shelvin NT 4*
Ferrel 3*
Thomas 3*
2018
Cotton 4* bust
Jenkins 3*
Livingston 3*
2019
Ika NT 4*
Evan’s 3*
Fonua 3*
2 good DL in 3 years and they were both NTs.

Our DL recruiting and retention was bad before Aranda got here, lest we forget how we had barely any line depth in 2017 and 2018. We attempted to fill in that gap by recruiting 15 lineman between 2017 and 2019, but the 2018 class was really bad in terms of retention.

They truly lack the NT depth to run it right now, but with the transfer portal I think they could very easily assimilate to a 3-4 in an offseason.
We need 5* guys consistently on the line. Bama and UGA are killing it because they have thay and unreal depth. If you watch a UgA game they sub out the whole line every 4 downs. They are 3 deep
I love Aranda but the recruiting Achilles hill is real and that's what he lacks from Saban and Kirby. Both are just as brilliant defensively but they are the best recruiters in the country.

LSU's DL has more talent on it right now than it has had in nearly 10 years
Aranda's defenses have been more LB-forward. Which is what the game has shifted too. The DL are more workmen-like pawns to create tackling lanes for LB.
Alabama's best 3 defensive players are LB's: Will Anderson, To'oTo'o, and Christian Harris.
Same can be said for UGA. Their best defensive players are LB's.

Jones started using more 3-4 concepts since the bye week...have you noticed the improvement in our defense?
Posted on 11/15/21 at 11:24 am to Magician2
LSU has been mostly in a 3-4/3-3-5 in the last two games as well as against UF...
Posted on 11/15/21 at 11:25 am to Lester Earl
UGA hasn’t had a DL get more than 3.5 sacks since 2016
It’s also insane that good DO keep going there considering they have an extensive track record of DL going undrafted.

Jordan Davis is about to change that.
But I agree with you. They do their jobs freeing up the linebackers which is the unquestionable strength of UGa. Dean, Smith , Quay, T Walker are frickint studs.
They just have unreal depth in their rotations only Bama can be compared.
I hope we get on that type of recruiting level.
It's difficult for us though with our weed rules because it's guaranteed suspensions or dismissals every damn for us.

Exactly what I was going to say.
There aren't that many elite programs running a 4-man front as base these days. If Bama/UGA can get the dogs, we can, too.

If Ika comes back with dave we are set.

Dave Aranda is a Top 5 defensive coach in college football right now and isn't even particularly married to a particular front.

My only concern with Aranda - or any HC with a DC is 3-4/3-3-5
Here's a little secret...
We've had a lot of success this year running 3-3-5.
Shhh...

We ran it against Miss St what other games did we run it start to finish?

Why are you injecting "start to finish" in this?
We've ran it several times and most successful defenses don't stick with 1 formation anyway...like AT ALL.
