Do you think Helf isn't capable of calling the plays? I am not one that would be stuck on the issue personally.

From what I recall, the resident Oregon fans cautioned us against him.
I live in the NW and I watch all their games. I never thought him becoming the HC would be a good idea. I'm not surprised on the drop off.
As an LSU fan I don't want him as our OC.

I'm not a fan. It doesn't matter if he is capable.

I never liked him as HC. However, I like him as a coordinator. If LSU wants to go with spread concepts, he is a great choice.

Here is my take on Helfrich:
1) He is thorough on the recruiting trail. His recruits see the field and he cut down on the boom vs bust recruits. He also elevated the quality of the walk ons. The bottom half of the roster is better. When talking specifically about the offense, it's deep and the next OC will be like a kid in the candy store. The downside is we don't seem to have that one elite guy to count on.
2) He is a bright football mind. He just can't be the guy to push the team's buttons. He needs to be under a type A personality.
3) I personally believe qb development failures were due to Frost. I think he is great at evaluating qbs and developing them. Some would argue with me though.
All in all, Helfrich sitting in LSU with that much talent within 6 hours driving distance would be fun to watch.
Sign me up for that. Helfrich and Aranda would make quite the duo

I think without Chip he would be even worse. We'd never know though because he did have Chip. Unless you look at his awesome success at CU.
I personally don't attribute any success the QB's had while Chip was there is due to anything MH did. Ok, maybe a little but there's no doubt in my mind Chip is mostly responsible for the success the QB's had.
I completely disagree.

I told my UO friend that very first time he coached against Stanford that he just wasn't a head coach.
The way I see it: if Chip Kelly thinks Helfrich is a brilliant coordinator, then he's probably a brilliant coordinator

I am getting a woody just thinking about it.

Then why wouldn't Chip trust him enough to let him call the plays? Just another coach who brought on a friend. We've been there before and I hope we don't go there again with Lane.

Maybe because of the controlling personality Chip has. His team, his offense, his playcalls. Really quite simple.
Don't know enough about Helfrich to comment on his play calling but I know enough about the Oregon offense to know that's not what I want here. Not the full bore version. I think elements of it are a must but not that full on uptempo style.
That offense is too soft

Didn't Oregon get shite on vs SEC defenses when they were in their offensive prime?

We never had problems getting offensive talent to LSU ,we just have problems with calling smart plays and knowing how to identify and exploit mismatches and favorable matchups...basically coaching that talent.

Steve Greatwood (Oregon's offensive line coach) "found" Mariota. Oregon at that time recruited by "zones" not positions, and Greatwood had Hawaii. Helfrich went to see him in practice. Mariota was not the starter for his HS at that point. Helfrich called Kelly and told him how good he was, Chip said to offer him.
I've watched every Oregon game since mid-08 or so. The offense is better overall with Helfrich. The recruiting is worse. They are less HUNH based, less option-run based than Kelly era. Kelly put some guys on the field his first few years who wouldn't make the team as walk-ons now. So it's true the bottom end is better.
Kelly also had better classes come in, many of whom quit football, got hurt, transferred, etc. Kelly would sit talented guys because of attitude, work ethic, etc. Helfrich is obviously more inclined to let the talent play. Helfrich presumably found Justin Herbert (freshman QB from Eugene) last year when he had no offers. Herbert is the 2nd best QB in the PAC-12 and first true freshman QB to start for Oregon since 1987.
Helfrich obviously does call some plays - you can see a style change that's taken place. I don't accept that he'd been with Oregon 7 years and didn't call any plays. Helfrich made the mistake of being the Head Coach and keeping QBs as his position group as well - that probably caused the QB situation to suffer leading into the tail end of the Mariota era.
Oregon's offense wasn't as good this year because of years of languishing OL recruiting, OL injuries, losing Devon Allen, no obvious QB solution to start, losing their best OT right away, bad/disgruntled play from some of the presumed stars, and starting 4 RFr. OL most of the year.
Over his tenure Helfrich has had less instances of the offense "stalling out" than happened under Chip. Helfrich is a very good coordinator, very smart and adaptable. He was not a good head coach and a combination of factors this year led to his demise. I can tell you of the head coach candidates that are being prominently mentioned right now in the Portland media there are none of them I would prefer to Helfrich. If that's all they got, they messed up firing him. He could have rode it out if they got Pendergast or Nolan last year instead of Hoke.

Helfrich would be $$$$ at LSU - book it!

Doesn't have to. Recruiting and motivation are O's job.

So the worse stint in recent years with him calling plays results in just bad luck? Got it.
I don't doubt he's a decent QB coach and offensive mind but so was Gary Crowten who worked at Oregon as well.
I'm just not as quick to jump all over a hot name just because it sounds cool like some people here. I think Briles would be the better hire unless he landed a HC gig.

I would be on board with Helfrich.

Talked to Helfrich, Riley, and the young Briles. Kiffin still #1 but Houston could wreck that.
