I admit I do not know much about other coaches outside of LSU. I’ve researched all names being tossed around and lately Chris Peterson is up there.

After reading this LINK, why are people thinking he would come back to coaching at all, much less LSU? If he left because he was “burnt out”, his job won’t be easier at LSU vs UW. This article also touches on him not being a fan of NIL and the cutthroat game of recruiting.

What am I missing here? He’s a great coach and a high character man from what I’m seeing. 100% who we’d want leading this team. But LSU/ SEC is about as cutthroat as they come

Call me crazy, but if we were going for a coach who is currently out of work, why wouldn’t we have announced it yet?

He is not. Watch the Pack 12 broadcasts. He is really comfortable.

I agree with this. Make no sense if he’s the guy.

Others seem to think he’s a possibility and I could get an answer on why in the other threads so figured I’d start my own and try and get some clarification

This is a great take by him. Maybe it relates to us, as majority of the fanbase wants to "win the press conference" with this hire.

The only reason I think it’s possible is the rumors that we will find out on Sunday, coupled with the rumors that we weren’t going to announce a new HC until the season was over.

IF both of these are true, I can see SW coming to an agreement with Petersen and just not making it public until the day after the regular season. Which, to me, would make more sense than announcing an agreement on Sunday with a coach who is still playing for a championship (Riley, Fickell, potentially Aranda)

May have been a stipulation in Orgeron's separation agreement not to announce his replacement until after the last game.

Man he's spot on (and his 2nd and 3rd points describe someone like Matt Campbell to a t).

These coaches never stay in retirement when they quit that young.

Petersen is the choice. Write it down.

Ok I don't know, but I think so.

We don’t want to hire a guy that’s too good at his job. Petersen is a little too good to hire here. Same goes for Joe Brady as coordinator. Too good as a college OC with a good qb to risk trying to see what he could do as OC here again with a five star qb coming in. We would rather Tom Herman here as an experiment with Aranda being HC.

Good coaches, but not so good that we win too much. We can’t handle success around here like that. We like bargain bin shopping for our guys.

My theoretical answer to the question is:

a. Gives him the opportunity to feel out future staff who are currently coaching without the attachment of "LSU" or anything binding to get the prospective assistant in trouble with his current boss.

b. If he's signed, it has to be filed with the NCAA and Orgeron is out immediately. So while he's trying to line up staff, and this goes for any coach, we are down 1 coach recruiting. You can only have 10.

c. So that before, weeks before, the early signing period not only are we announcing a HC but announcing at least most of the staff (because he had time to line it up during this period). That way we're not recruiting for the first signing period with uncertainty of who the coordinators or assistants will be. Instead of telling a recruit "come play for HC X or Y, we're going to get the best coordinators" it is "come play for HC X & Y and Coordinator C or D". Just like the stock market, uncertainty is always a negative. This would reduce, probably not eliminate, that uncertainty in recruiting in this crucial period.

Just understand, this applies to Petersen or any other coach "signed in principle". But applies to Petersen more perfectly. I think above was the goal all along, and it makes sense. But it is applicable in a few, but limited, scenarios.

Damn it I shouldn't have watched that. Now I'm going to cry when it's not him.

Bingo. There is so much disinformation out there but when it comes to what we do know, it has to be viewed pragmatically and not emotionally

There are likely countervailing offers for Petersen. I was told by a TCU Booster that the USC job was Petersen's to turn down, and it's interesting that we've heard zero about anything USC or LSU with any real teeth to it.

Petersen 1A, Aranda or Campbell 1B
