SOURCE CHILL SPORTS: "BREAKING ** Sources close to the situation in Athens feel Georgia Bulldogs Head Coach Kirby Smart WILL listen to an offer from Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank in the next few days. Earlier today the Falcons fired Head Coach Arthur Smith after 3 seasons. It is believed that the new world of college football with NIL deals and the transfer portal make the NFL more appealing to coach Smart than ever before. The current broken structure of college football forces coaches to perpetually recruit high school players, possible transfers, and their own current players year round. Smart who played at Georgia, has won two national championships as the Bulldogs Head Coach. The Falcons are in position to offer Smart almost double his current contract! Smart ranks 3rd of all college coaches making just over $10 million annually. The top group of coaches in the NFL are making roughly $20 million annually. Another factor in the decision is the pressure of playing in the SEC. Essentially every week in college football is a must win situation for national contenders. NFL teams can have a successful year and playoff run with a 9-8 record. Stay tuned for updates as this is a fluid situation. #chillsports #UGA #FalconsNation #atlanta #NFL #collegefootball #GoDawgs #atlantafalcons

He’s got nothing to lose listening and you can’t blame Blank for making him say no.

That being said KS would be absolutely crazy to leave the situation he has in Georgia for the vagaries of the NFL. Smart is not dumb—pardon the pun—and I’m sure he remembers Nick Saban and the Dolphins. He’s not going to the NFL, much less to a coach’s graveyard like Atlanta.

He doesn’t strike me as an NFL guy, but he has been pretty anti NIL and portal so if Arthur Blank wants to throw frick you money at him maybe he’d listen.

Is Sexton his agent too?

He's like Saban. If he can't recruit a better roster than everyone else, he loses his primary advantage. NFL isn't a fit.

Why not double your salary for 3 or so years. If it goes bad he would instantly get snatched up by a Blue Blood making bank again.

If I were Kirby I'd place a call to Saban and get his honest opinion about that move.

That extra $10M is hard to turn down. I see it this way.

1) If after 5 years things are not working out I don't see that college would close its doors to Kirby.
2) The landscape of NIL and Collectives would have more clarity in 5 years if not sooner.
3) Either Georgia welcomes him back or he slides in as Saban's replacement, again, considering things don't work out in the league.

Might be the best move to make considering the upside.

Kirby wins just like Saban does... By out-talenting and out-recruiting the competition.

I know he is a good defensive X's and O's guy, but he is also not exactly known as a big scheme guy like many of the guys that excel in the pros.

I think he ultimately uses this as leverage for a new deal in Athens.

1. Kirby leaves for the Falcons.
2. Kirby realizes the NFL isn't for him after two years.
3. Nick retires and Alabama hires Kirby.

I imagine with these college coaches going to the NFL the biggest shock is realizing, with the salary cap, you can't have a great offense AND a great defense. He can guy and build his teams however he wants at UGA.

Why do I get a feeling where this is going?

*Kirby goes to Falcons.
*Starts looking around 3 years later because of the same issues Saban left.
*Saban retires.
*Bama comes calling and he takes that job because UGA has hired Kirk Ferentz to be head coach.

We are left dealing with the gumps again for another 15 years.

He has a dynasty and is like a God figure in the state of Georgia

The falcons?

LOL

he's not leaving his alma mater for the Falcons... put the crack pipe down

Last I checked, despite all the NIL and transfer portal BS, he's still sitting at #1 in recruiting..

so, ...he isn't leaving that situation for more money...10 million a year already is generational wealth
