If LSU hired Coach O full time, would LSU fans regret firing Les?

Depends on if he feels he did a good enough job as Interim to deserve the HC position. If he wins out or just loses to Bama and doesnt get the job, hes not going to stay around.
He just went through this at SC

So you'd choose the potential disaster that is Coach O over "stale" top 20 performances?

Jimbo 50/50

I think any incoming coach would find it preferable to keep one of the best recruiters in the game on staff, who also happens to be a good dline coach. Most likely it depends on Coach O more than incoming coach.
I think one of three things will happen
- We lose another 3+ games and team doesn't live up to potential. Coach O can accept that he didn't do enough to earn the job and still wants to be on team. This likely still depends on incoming coach, but Coach O's opinion of him rather than the other way around. He won't stay to work under a guy he feels he is better than.
- We lose 1-2 games, but they are close and we are really competitive. This is kind of a gray area, and likely Coach O will not stay if he isn't offered the job.
- We win out and Coach O earns the job

I really think he jets if he's not given the full time gig at the end of the year.
That's too bad. He would be a great RC/ DL coach under Fisher or Herman.
But, if he does, then he is Cajun Tier Bait.

If he feels that he was given a fair shot and the new hire is just a can't miss guy then maybe. If lsu jerks him around like usc did then he would definitely leave.

He left Ole Miss in 2007...he has had numerous years to get another HC gig...what has held him back?
No one has hired him. I listened to an interview with him just prior to the chatter of him coming here two years ago. All he kept saying then was how he would like to get another shot to be a head coach....anywhere. He had learned a bunch about what he did wrong being a head coach, etc. From that interview, it seems as though his main goal and aspiration is to be a head coach again. I can't imagine anything will change now that he has been given another interim job.

I think he's been an assistant on some big stages (MIami, USC, and now LSU). In two of those places he's been an interim HC on teams with lots of talent.
And he'd rather take those assistant jobs than earning his chops at a mid major which is where he could probably get a job. And you have to think it's fear. That's what you do if you want to be a head coach--you take a HC job.
I don't think LSU should hire a guy who couldn't win at someplace else--and who's only going to inject some enthusiasm into the talent that LSU already has. Saban, Herman, and Fisher could all win at Tulane. I don't think O could--or else he would have taken a job like that.

Here's the deal with O. If the team does well enough the rest of the year that he believes he should get the job, he will not accept sticking around as an assistant. And he wants the full time job as much as any coach on the planet.
One would assume something like 6-2 with close but well played losses to Bama and another legit team would make O think he deserves it (which would be somewhat similar to what happened at USC).

If we get 6 or more wins with him as interim head coach and we don't keep him, he is gone, some other struggling program will pick him up
Posted on 9/28/16 at 3:21 pm to VermilionTiger
I think his time at USCw is over rated
But only 1 of those wins was against a
Arizona 8-5
Utah 5-7
Oregon State 7-6
Cal 1-11
Colorado was 4-8
Stanford 11-3
A combined 36-40 record
To be fair Stanford was a good good team, but you don't make a HC decision based off of 1 good win.

I thought his beef was that he didn't get a fair shot and passed up for sark.

I think Coach O is going into this with the full intention of getting the job on a pernanent basis.
i could see him using it as a audition for other jobs also if LSU doesn't work out.
it will be a shame to lose him and it hurts to even think about. i wanted him at LSU for years in a dl coach capacity. but if one of the big guns is available you gotta kiss O bye bye.

I would really hate to lose his presence in the program.
Any new head coach is going to want his own people. It would be very unusual to keep the interim head coach on staff in any capacity ... way to much distraction and conflict for the player's loyalty.
But..I seriously would like to know what everyone sees is desirable in Coach "O?" What has he done coaching the DL that is obviously impacting? Who has he recruited that wasn't already leaning to LSU?
He apparently wasn't offered any coaching position anywhere after the USC gig... not DC, nothing, until long afterward LSU gave him a DL job. That is a pretty big demotion, and not a strong resume statement.
His head coaching gig in Mississippi was a disaster, not just from W-L but from organization, leadership, and modern coaching concepts.
I've made this point before... this season he is on the sidelines drawing plays on a white board with a marker... and at the same time high schools are using I-pad based graphics and instantaneous video analysis. This does not speak to his grasp of the latest.
His presence in front of the press makes Bert look like a polished and urbane spokesman.
I truly do not get the attraction of "O" to some of the LSU fan base. I can only guess that attraction is akin to a Barner wanting a hayseed farmer named "Clem" to be head coach of his team.

Just pay him a fat some of money and keep him DL and recruiting coordinator.

If he goes something like 6-2 again as interim, he wont get the job here, but I could see him getting a HC job somewhere based on his past two results as an interim coach, (12-4 record)
We all know that despite Coach O's self professed love for LSU, it isn't a big as his love and desire to be a head coach
