If Coach O is not head coach after this season, could he exist on the new staff?

I would really hate to lose his presence in the program. Hopefully the next coach, if not Coach O, will find a way to keep him.

Interesting question that only Coach O would know. History would says he would leave though.

I don't see him accepting a demotion especially with him going so hard trying to audition himself.

Depends entirely on how well the team does with him as Head Coach.

He turned USC's season around and wasn't given a fair shot. I honestly believe that 5-3 or worse, and he'll be on staff. 6-2 and he's out of here if he isn't offered the job.

I think Coach O is going into this with the full intention of getting the job on a pernanent basis. Hell, that is the only thing he sees. Anything but the head coaching gig next year and I bet he will be gone. He may have been expecting Miles to get let go all along.

I've considered this since he was announced. I really think he jets if he's not given the full time gig at the end of the year.

It depends if he wins. If he wins a lot, he'll leave if not offered. If he doesn't win a lot, he'd probably understand why he wasn't offered and accept his old DL position if the new coach wanted.

My guess is he would bolt but I would thank him for taking on the interim gig and taking pride in it and not just mailing it in.
I appreciate what he's done already and that's all he can do in this situation.

I'm sure Bama would come get him.

Probably not, though it would be ideal. Make him Assoc HC or whatever like Aranda is to him now.

I know nothing about his personal life, so assuming the family is flexible, it will come down to whether or not he feels he was given a legitimate shot. To me this means if we whiff on consensus home run hires, and there are only about 2 realistic candidates here, and the team does well, he would expect it.

If we don't whiff on the top guys, then it would depend on how well we did. Run the table, and I don't think this is impossible, I can't imagine him staying. 1 close loss to Bama or another team an it's probably a toss up.

the only history we have is him leaving Los Angeles while getting passed over, all while his family was here in Mandeville.

No one knows, but having his sons both in college in Louisiana, and LSU still being a dream job, I can see if he's interviewed, but convinced that the administration is adamant about going in an offensive minded coaching directing, he'd understand and could be retained.

Like I mentioned in another post, Bobby Hebert, O's cousin, teammate and friend, said that IF O goes undefeated, he could see him getting the offer, but he also knows LSU will want to go in an offensive coaches direction. If anyone would knight for O, it would be Bobby, and Bobby even realizes that with the offense we've seen the last several years, LSU will likely go in that direction.

Can't have your cake and eat it too. He wants to be a HC again. If he's passed over for the job he will use that experience to interview for a HC job somewhere else. USC wanted him to stay bad and he shot them the bird on his way out the door by saying he'd rather sit out of FB than be their recruiting coordinator.

lol

no one mentioned pull.....but he is on air all the time, so i'm sure he's got more than you think. but again, this wasn't about pull, it was about him being in O's corner, but understanding the direction LSU would go regardless.

He left Ole Miss in 2007...he has had numerous years to get another HC gig...what has held him back?

Only way he stays if he doesn't get the job is if we hire Lane Kiffin. Even then it's not likely.

If LSU hired Coach O full time, would LSU fans regret firing Les?

I do have to say I love his enthusiasm for the job. It remains to be seen how that will play out on the field in terms of results but i can say with 100% certainty that no other candidate for the job wants it as much as O. Its not even close.

He's had to carefully craft his reputation again. He knows he needs to land the right HC gig, somewhere he can win, because another bad stint could do him in.

eta: I guess I should qualify my statement above by saying he eventually wants to be a HC again. He may not leave LSU specifically for a HC role, he may go somewhere else and be an assistant again. But it won't be at LSU or USC. The big difference is, both the USC and LSU admins will have told you they don't consider you HC material. If Kiffin gets a head gig he's gone in a heartbeat to be his recruiting coordinator.
