Checked all the boxes and yet couldn’t get it done. There’s just no science to picking the right coach. Feels like luck of the draw.

I remember calling my shot that finding diamonds in the rough like Dak Prescott wasn’t sustainable, that Florida wouldn’t sneak up on anyone like Moo State tends to do, and if he couldn’t pull in every 4 and 5 in Florida he wouldn’t do shyt there.

It's like Scott frost. Seems like a home run on paper and didn't work out. Mullen had a lot of success early on, we will see if he gets back to that or continues this trek. I think Florida gives him another year to figure it out, but I could be wrong

Mullen has never been a good HC. Only because of Dak was he successful a few years at Ms St.

Mullen's a very good OC, but he's never been a scary thought as a HC.

He never elevated his recruiting. As the best program in Florida currently he should be pulling top 5 classes. Highest he's gotten there is 9th.

Same reason I don't think Franklin going 9-4 at Vandy automatically translates to success at LSU

The scary part was Mullen WITH Florida talent pool.

However, FL has been raided by Bama (7 of the top-15 players), Miami has recruited way more local talent. Hell, Maryland recruited more top-25 players than UF from the state of Florida.

So without that talent, Mullen aint so scary. He sort of recruits at UF like he did at MSST (same overall strategy). He's "leaving money on the table" by doing that. And it isn't working.

* That's why "overall recruiting strategy" is more important than W/L and how many points they scored Sat. in our vetting of our new coach.

I dont. Excellent offensive mind, mediocre recruiter, boneheaded in game coach.

Had he brought in an Austin Thomas or retooled the recruiting department he could've had them rolling. Instead the pompous arse seems to think he could just coach his way past Georgia and then all the recruits would flow in after the fact. not how it works. One of the best examples of all time to illustrate how important recruiting is. you can have the best mind on the field it doesn't matter.

Wonder where he lands next.

Mullen could be an elite coach but he has two flaws

1. He hates recruiting
2. He hires all his friends and doesn’t hold them accountable

I don’t think Mullen is a championship caliber coach.
Classic over thinker

He was getting it done until one of his players threw a shoe and they lost their shot at a cfb playoff birth. The stupidity of that mentally broke him.

If you can’t recruit at the highest level at these top schools, you will just be a average team

Just in the last 10-15 years. Some Championship winning/competing coaches:

Orgeron - promoted from existing staff
Ryan Day - promoted from existing staff
Lincoln Riley - promoted from existing staff
Dabo Swinney - promoted from existing staff
Jimbo Fisher - coach in waiting/promoted from existing staff with no head coaching experience

Championship winning head coaches that make you scratch your head:

Orgeron
Chizik
Miles

It is an inexact science

Nailed it. Especially 1. I'm sure he'll be forced to fire Grantham next year so 2 is more of a temporary set back, but he just doesn't recruit well enough to be the coach of a "big boy" program.

When Ed Orgeron is your oppositional kryptonite, you have serious problems.
