How bad does the Jimbo "Head Coach in Waiting" look now?

I'd imagine FSU would be a MAJOR player in its coaching search, much more than Notre Dame will be
Yet FSU is settling for Jimbo Fisher

They could always pay him to go away, as per their agreement. Nothing says he must get the job; it's still up to the admin.

When you consider that he has basically been calling the shots since he was hired, how calming or reassuring to the FSU faithful is this?

Agreed. The coach in waiting concept is not smart. There are better candidates, and it's not as if they are trying to make a smooth transition so as to not upset a well oiled machine.

Nice sig quote
i dont like the idea of a coach in waiting, like someone said, he has had a big hand in everything since he has been there, what makes them think things are going to change

well it's kind of like how tommy tub made sure that franklin would fail by not supporting him
bowden still had his cronies on the staff

For the life of me I don't know Jimbo has done to make FSU annoint him years ago.
FSU would be in the same boat as Florida in late 2004. The most attractive openning and it comes on the market at the very beginning of the coaching search season.

Brian Kelly at FSU
If he could recruit Florida well, it could help LSU if he's able to steal recruits from Meyer

The whole coach in waiting to bad business. It is a knee jerk reaction to help out with recruiting.
Maryland has a coach in waiting. They are going to have to pay him off when they fire Ralph next year.

but it's still much of Bowden's staff...I don't know how much control Jimbo has over Andrews' game plan.

Yeah and some of the coaches had Asst HC or Assoc HC titles and often undermined Jimbo ... supposedly Chuck Amato was a bitch about the HCIW deal.

I think Jimbo will be a really good HC if he's allowed to build his own staff.

the question is how many years do you give Jimbo since he's basically been the coach for a few years now? 2?

they will owe him $5 mil if he is not named head coach. i think they'll give him a try. following a legend is almost always a guaranteed failure but this may actually work out due to bowden letting the program slip into mediocrity. expectations are tempered. he will have a few years to get them into contention for the ACC title. let's face it; if he can't do that with the state of florida's rich recruits and the realative weakness of the ACC he should be fired. i agree with your premise though; hiring a coordinator as a HC is risky. TU will find that our with muschamp also.

But he hasn't.
I say Jimbo deserves at least 3, maybe 4 years. If he cleans house with the current FSU staff, you know Jimbo hasn't been calling the shots.

I'd say at least 4. he hasn't been the coach, there's been talk of him not having power all year. hell, I think Bowden still ultimately wanted final say over who the new DC would be if he came back.
eta: and I guess Bowden should have had final say, but the whole deal was kinda awkward if you figure said DC would be conceivably doing most of his time there under Jimbo after Bowden left.
