Auburn fans will melt but I think it would be a solid hire.

Powers that be couldn’t agree on Freeze so Grimes is who everyone settled on

You didn’t hear that because Freeze was never an option. He’s not allowed back in the SEC ever again.

Any source that says Freeze is a serious candidate is not a serious source.

FACT

But you will get downvoted by some Auburn shill who wants him so bad he will refuse to accept the fact that Freeze will never be allowed back in the SEC (and probably never at a major program again that isn’t private).

Not involved. What has been reported is that this is John Cohem's hire and his alone.

So the people who will actually give the money to fund the contract are not going to have a say or give input into who Auburn hires?

I would be surprised if it is Kiffin to Auburn. Reason for that is Auburn hasn't done anything great from the last two hired. Might it be that Kiffin is now convinced that he is happy at Ole Miss.

Based purely on SEC bylaws the league only needs to be consulted on hiring of Freeze but any SEC school has the ability to hire Freeze should they decide he is their choice.

?

That is what the Auburn reporter on the radio said the other day. Cohen wasn't going to take the job if he was going to have people meddling in his athletic program. Namely the people that have Auburn on the hook for two buyouts at this time.

No chance in hell that Jeff Grimes will be the next coach at Auburn.

Should be Lane unless the past few days have scuttled the deal, which is doubtful. If not it'll be Freeze.

With Freeze the “powers that be” includes the SEC office. I highly doubt he coaches in any fashion in the conference ever again.

If Auburn decided to pursue Freeze, could the SEC do anything about it?
The short answer is no, but there would be a discussion.

SEC bylaw 19.8.1.2 requires member schools to "exercise best efforts to hire individuals committed to rules compliance." It does not, however, explicitly forbid league schools from hiring coaches with NCAA compliance baggage.

"While each member institution makes its own hiring decisions," the bylaw states, "member institutions shall, at a minimum, request specific information from each candidate concerning his/her rules compliance record and communicate with NCAA enforcement and the Conference office regarding the same prior to offering employment to any candidate."

But there's more.

"In addition," the bylaw reads, "where a member institution considers hiring an individual who has engaged in unethical conduct as defined under NCAA Bylaws or who has participated in activity that resulted, or may result, in a Level I, Level II or major infraction, the President or Chancellor of that member institution is expected to consult directly with the Commissioner prior to offering employment to the individual."
