Beginning to resemble Dinardo, he couldn't hire quality assistants because he was on thin ice. O may be perceived as a short timer.

We went after the hottest name in CFB and someone who might be a NFL DC in a few weeks but for sure next year

We are not getting turned down by unemployed retreads

If we go after Nielsen last year or if Campbell doesn't get Lions job we get him

Everyone wants O to go after the best of the best and make them say No. This is what that process looks like. There are plenty of elite options available. The panic is dumb.

He’s gone after the top candidate in CFB and Nielsen. I wouldn’t call the latter a top candidate, but he’s obviously someone Orgeron wanted. Patience after missing on those two is fine. I’d rather that over he just settling on someone. There are more quality coaches out there to be vetted and interviewed.

That being said, his comments about Ponamsky being so involved in the search is a huge concern for me. That man shouldn’t be doing anything other than secretary work.

Thats such dumb logic. Hindsight is always 20/20. Why didnt we hire Dabo in 2005? We are so dumb.

They are trying to make the right hire, but nobody on an upward trajectory wants to hitch their wagon to a shrimp boat.

I don't think the issue is the targets as much as they way the process has gone.

They canned Pelini almost immediately after the season ended on 12/19 but certainly had to know for at least a month before they were going to need a new DC. After the firing, they waited until Cincinnati's season was over to interview/try to hire Freeman. Certainly understandable. They thought they had him until he chose ND. That hurts, but it happens.

But THEN they apparently decided to wait until the Saints season ended to hire Neilsen. That was another two weeks of seemingly complete inactivity as they "had their guy". The Saints season ends on Sunday night. Neilsen is a "done deal" on Monday...until he is not. So that waiting for two more weeks now seems to have been in vain. Which begs the question...what would have happened if the Saints had WON on Sunday? It would have been feasible that LSU could have been waiting until Feb. 8th to try to hire a guy who they CLEARLY did not have "locked up" beforehand.

Now, they are over a month down the road since Pelini's firing and at least two months (maybe more) removed from knowing they would need a new DC...with nothing to show and apparently no closer to having a DC than they were a month ago.

Unfortunately, this is true.

The price for someone desirable is likely too high for LSU to overcome the Orgeron stigma

Ideally, you would love to see bottom lines on ESPN stating things like we saw yesterday:

Saban expected to sign Marrone as OL coach

Not Alabama, Saban

I think that's the only reason Freeman didn't take the job. Brian Kelly isn't going anywhere in ND. O's footing at LSU is much less certain.

Freeman's wife nixed the deal. For a quick year to two year stop, he wanted to keep his family in the midwest. Can't argue with it. Going from the midwest to BR for a short jaunt it pretty difficult with a large family.

Nielsen wanted the job. Ponamsky, O, and Woodward went about this the complete wrong way. They should have contacted the saints and payton instead of back channeling it all.

So I wouldn't calculate that as we can't find anyone who "wants to coach the defense"

Good point

But CEO will be the coach for the next 2-3 years regardless. LSU isn't about to pay $18-$20MM buyout.

Who did we miss out on because of timing? People keep saying this but did our timing actually cause us to miss out on any potential DC hires?

I disagree. Look at Freeman and Nielsen, both have something in common. Both are coaches looking for upward mobility. Why wouldn’t O’s possibly shaky footing not be an asset in this case? Come in, do a half arse job with returning players and studs everywhere, and LSU’s D is light years improved. In 2 or 3 years, the first call for a prospective new HC would be to the new Defensive savior of the universe. If O stays your still the guy that brought LSU’s defense back, and will be in line with any DC in the nation for a P5 head spot...just my $0.02.

BTW either Vol was EXTREMELY lucky, or they’ve known that Poohlini was gone after Bammer this year...O should have had a binder full of prospective choices being vetted and gauged for interest at very least. GDT’s

Same situation with Miles! Win one then never get another one.

WOW! You are one brilliant astute observer! How many natties has Georgia, Florida, Auburn, Ole Miss, Miss St, Arkansas, Tennessee, Missouri, Vanderbilt or South Carolina won over the last 4 years O has been at LSU?

Are you clairvoyant? You can see in the future if you don't know what clairvoyant means and I suspect you don't know much. Since you know now O will never win another natty who's going to win the Kentucky Derby next year so I can put my life savings on that horse.

This is true.

Orgeron is not proving to be capable of handling the single biggest issue that was raised when he was initially hired.

I'd say it's a crapshoot of whether the guy who ends up with the job is going to be good for the program.

This is bigger than O, this is what LSU does, and has always done. No matter who is in charge, LSU is a fricking shite show, on so many levels. The university fits our state so well.

Didn't we win a national title just one year ago, and aren't we the winningest program in the SEC over the last twenty years (with three NC's)? If LSU is a "shite show," I can't imagine what other programs are.
