Could Both Professional and College Football be Using Open AI to Coach?

... is this the reason coaches with 20plus years of coaching are retiring all of the sudden???
Maybe the reason for that Michigan scandal was to gain the gap information the Open AI program needed for a complete run through the season?

Maybe that is the reason Nick Saban retired --- he realized that he was playing football against a computer, which he was not prepared for.
... it's like playing chess against a computer --- very difficult to win.
Belickick has 20 plus years of coaching, all on film. Analyzed out the wazoo, do you think he would have had a chance in the future if this is the case?
Also where is the university of wash?
Why up there probably across the street from Bill Gates
And just who is the biggest investor of Open AI???
... just saying ...

some of you make it so hard not to insult you. we have the stupidest fans.

AI is going to take over a lot of things. It’s going to destroy a lot of things too.

I think some of you old guys need to understand what is coming up in the AI world. It’s getting crazy. It’s a topic worth at least glancing at at this point.

Maybe for honing analytics but at the end of the day players are human and have to execute.

Which op is going a little far with it at this point.
But yes. Play calling will start having strong influence from AI. If not taking over mostly. But there will always be a need for human interaction.

How about we just use AI generated players to play the game as well? This would save the owners millions..

They already have this through their team of analyst. AI may replace analyst but it won't replace the coaches.

Using computer software on diagnosing tendencies and plays has been around forever.
"AI" is such a catch all term now, it is basically useless

You'll know AI has taken over coaching when teams start going for 4th and 1 from anywhere on the field, and always going for 2.

No, it's ignorant coaches using ignorant analysis of advanced statistics that they in no way understand.

Automation & machine learning work best with large sample sizes.
Rosters are constantly churning in CFB. AI to call plays may not be effective without somehow incorporating player profiles & those profiles still have to be built on data, which would require snaps.
What would be interesting is AI assisted scouting — will probably be able to turn game film into a full report by pushing a button lol. Coaching staffs w/ 100 analysts may get smaller.

LOL, so let's try this out...
I gave ChatGPT 4 this prompt:
and got this response:
and ChatGPT 3.5 gave me:
Basically it's saying "do whatever you want!"
So at least these freebie versions of AI aren't helping much.
I gave ChatGPT 4 this prompt:
quote:
I would like you to make a suggestion. In a hypothetical college football game, the 2019 LSU football team is playing 2019 Alabama where LSU has the ball and it is 3rd and goal at the Alabama 5 yard line. What sort of play should the LSU offense run?
and got this response:
quote:
In a hypothetical scenario where the 2019 LSU football team is playing against the 2019 Alabama team, and LSU has the ball on the 3rd and goal at the Alabama 5 yard line, the ideal play for LSU would depend on several factors such as the team's strengths, the opposing team's weaknesses, and the game situation.
However, based on the game statistics of the 2019 LSU vs. Alabama football game, which was won by LSU with a score of 46-41 ¹, we can infer that the LSU team had a strong offensive line and a talented quarterback. In this particular game, the LSU team scored 5 touchdowns and 1 field goal ¹.
Given that the ball is on the 5 yard line, a **running play** could be a good option for LSU. A running play would allow the team to gain a few yards and bring the ball closer to the end zone. Alternatively, a **short pass** could also be a viable option. A short pass would allow the quarterback to quickly pass the ball to a receiver who is close to the end zone, and the receiver could then run the ball into the end zone.
It's important to note that the ideal play for LSU would depend on several factors, and the team's coaching staff would be in the best position to make the final decision.
I hope this helps!
and ChatGPT 3.5 gave me:
quote:
In a hypothetical situation like this, the choice of play would depend on various factors such as the team's playbook, the strengths and weaknesses of both teams, and the specific skills of the players involved. However, a common strategy in a 3rd and goal situation from the 5-yard line could involve passing plays, considering the relatively short distance to the end zone.
A few potential play options could include:
Slant Route: A quick slant route by a wide receiver can exploit any openings in the defense, especially if the cornerback is playing off the line.
Fade Route: A fade route to a tall and skilled receiver could be attempted, aiming to throw the ball high towards the corner of the end zone where the receiver can use their height advantage.
Option Route: An option route, where the receiver has the flexibility to adjust their route based on the defense, can be effective in finding openings in coverage.
Play-Action Pass: Utilizing a play-action pass could help deceive the defense, potentially creating an opportunity for a receiver to get open in the end zone.
Ultimately, the decision would depend on the coaching staff's assessment of the opposing defense and their confidence in the team's ability to execute specific plays.
Basically it's saying "do whatever you want!"
So at least these freebie versions of AI aren't helping much.

AI is incredible at some things, but it is still a “brittle” technology. It might be able to digest all of an opponent’s games and provide a probability on their tendencies in specific situations.
But if you move away from what it has already specifically seen, the error/failure rate is extremely high.
Football is not chess. The game does not occur free of its changing environment and the human variables are not calculable for AI (AI requires sensing to incorporate those variables).
Coaches aren’t using AI in real time unless they want to decrease performance from their innate decision making capabilities
