Didn't this sorta happen with Stoops in Oklahoma's bowl game last season? Or was he technically on staff?

I mean, he wasn't on staff but he coached the team for over 15 years (most recently a few years ago), won a national title, and competed for a couple other ones so it's not that alike at all.

Colts are all in tanking the rest of the season, only reason why they would go this route. As crazy as Irsay is, he knows the best chance they have is to tank and hope they can get a future all star at qb. It’s worked for them in the past

And it's already a racial thing

So tired of white liberals telling everybody else what is or isn't right. It's the Colts franchise and if they feel like Saturday is the guy for this interim job, so be it. He is a legend there. I don't believe they can just pluck coaches currently coaching elsewhere, so who else does he want them to hire? Guys who aren't currently coaching?

Absolutely. I don't them for this at all. Two pretty good QB prospects at the top of this draft class. They know how important Luck and Peyton were for their franchise.

Well no one is surprised race has been brought up already. Race is injected into everything.

Look the redskins. They already saying Bezos will buy the team and Jay Z and Durant want to own the team too. It’s already been said the value is above 7.5 billion for the team and all it’s property. I guarantee Jay Z and Durant aren’t worth half that between the two of them.

How can he be expected to function like that in the middle of the season

Dropping like flies to end up getting the number one or two pick in the next draft.

i don't think i've ever seen an interim coach come from outside the current coaching staff, let alone from completely outside the coaching ranks altogether...

this is going to be quite entertaining...

It was just matter of time

I like Jeff Saturday and enjoyed working with him at ESPN. This is not a critique of him, but rather a NFL system that constantly moves the goalposts for white coaches, but holds Black coaches to tighter standards. A Black coach likely would never be in Jeff’s position.

Bill Barnwell

By all accounts, Jeff Saturday is a very nice, capable person, and I hope he does well in Indianapolis.

This hiring is also a reminder that the arbitrary experience roadblocks put out in front of minority candidates are nonsense.

quote:

Lindsay Rhodes

Jeff Saturday might be great, but the hire is peak *not reading the room* when it comes to the entire conversation surrounding lack of opportunity for minority coaches.

If Irsay really wanted to tank, he could have hired Jemele Hill.

NGL, if I'm 3/4s deep in a bottle of Jameson, that's exactly what I'd do.

With race and coaches, all 32 NFL head coaches could be Black and it’s still never enough for these people. Deep down I really think journalists that cover sports hate sports, but couldn’t hack it with the major newspapers and they just bring their negativity with them

This was completely proven as true in 2020.

They have a gigantic inferiority complex in relation to "real" reporters from the NYT, WaPo, etc.

Tony Dungy looks in the mirror and discovers that he is a white man this morning.

Jim Caldwell discovers the same thing.

I'm thinking Frank Reich said or did something that pissed off Irsay and that the coaching staff sided with Reich. So Irsay says, I'll show all those sober fuks......I'll call my drinking buddy. Jeff to coach

Starting practice squad Ehlinger over Ryan and Nick Foles is obviously a mandate from management/ownership and cant imagine the coaching staff would love that.

I would give my left nut as well as yours to have a QB like Matt Ryan playing for the Saints right now

He should have Peyton calling in the plays from his manning-cast man cave.

Strange hire.

Heard today some folks saying that if he has early success the rest of the league will follow suit and at least consider such inexperienced hires for coaching openings. "copycat league" they called it

His team looks to be playing well so far. Has a first time OC too. I hope he succeeds. Sometimes going a little out the box is needed.
