Let's look at this as if you are Chavis. UGA fans I challenge you to disagree with any of this. As I mentioned before, proximity to home is the only advantage that UGA really has in this fight. And who knows. That may be enough to sway him. And if Chavis did go to UGA then I don't think that makes UGA markedly better nor does it make LSU markedly worse. This isn't going to move UGA to the first tier of the SEC nor would it remove LSU from the first tier.

Facilities: Edge LSU. Sanford Stadium may be nicer than Tiger Stadium but LSU has a better academic facility for the athletes and better practice facilities (see LSU's indoor practice facility vs UGA's nonexistent one)

Compensation: Edge LSU. LSU's coaches are all paid more than their UGA counterparts. UGA may be slightly more profitable as an athletics dept than LSU is but they aren't passing that on to their coaches. UGA can't outbid LSU for the services of Chavis bc they aren't going to give him top dollar while just giving the rest of their coaches average compensation. You don't think that would create an uproar amongst the rest of the staff? Chavis stands to make more at LSU than at UGA.

Recent success: Edge LSU. 2 national titles in the last 6 years. 0 titles for UGA in most of our lifetimes. LSU was better this past season and seem to have the edge over UGA for at least the next few seasons. Right now UGA is at a crossroads as a program and it will be interesting to see how they rebound. They have been relegated to second fiddle in the state and are currently an afterthought in the SEC. Richt has to turn it around in 2010.

Access to talent: Edge LSU. Louisiana is a talent rich state. LSU has no competition for that talent. Georgia may produce its fair share of talented players but Tennessee, Auburn, Alabama, South Carolina, Clemson, Florida, Ga Tech, etc get their fair share of those players. Just look at where the top players in the state have gone each year. 2009 5 of top 10 players in Georgia went to UGA. 2008 6 of top 10. 2007 2 of the top 10. 2006 5 of the top 10. It's also been since 2006 that UGA has reeled in the top player in the state of Georgia. Compare that to LSU and its advantage in Louisiana. And LSU and UGA are at least equals on the national recruiting stage.

Equal at worst implies that the worst possible light one could view UGA in would have them equal to LSU. That's an insult, whether you were aware of it or not.

TulaneTiger, you are right. I threw that phrase out there without really thinking of it in the way you described. I was wrong in putting it like that and again, that was not my intent.

He's not in the initial wash of names being interviewed. Reggie Herring (Cowboys), Sal Sunseri (LB Alabama), Manny Diaz (MTSU), Mark Snyder (former Marshall HC, Ohio St DC), and Ellis Johnson (S. Carolina). They could always go back and try for Kirby Smart again. They have missed on Smart, Foster, and Koenning.

Shouldn't the title of this thread be changed? Chavis to UGA picking up steam? One idiot on a message board said something to this effect and has since been debunked by many LSU and UGA fans. There seems to be no validity to this rumor whatsoever. My guess is that UGA is going to end up with a better DC than Willie Martinez but someone who probably isn't in the upper echelon.

Bearded, all very good points. I'll attempt to refute them if possible.

Facilities: I'd say maybe a slight advantage to LSU. Both have big nice stadiums and rabid fanbases. You say LSU has a better academic facility, but if a recruit is going to be pushed over the edge for a school, wouldn't you think it would be the academics itself (which UGA has the edge) than the academic building? And even though we don't have an IPF, neither does Florida, and they don't seem to be hurting.

Compensation: Wash. While LSU coaches are paid more, we are going to spend what it takes on this hire. Mark Fox last year became the highest paid bb coach in our history before he coached his first game. Why? Because we're ready to turn the damn program around finally. Damon has said that we will open up the checkbook for this hire as well.

Recent success: No way to argue anything other than LSU. Georgia isn't chopped liver and still is a prestigious gig, but if you're just talking about recent success than LSU by a mile.

Talent access: Wash. This has been discussed a good bit. To simply things and hopefully not start an all-out war, I'll say that both schools have a wealth of talent to choose from. It's not like there's a disparity like TX and MS. Both have deep talent pools. LA has 0 instate competition going for it, while UGA has talent laden FL next door to pull from.

All in all, both schools would be a very desirable place to work. I don't know if Chavis would leave. Hell I don't know if he's even considered it. My OP was just to pass along some interesting info on the matter. I will continue to pass along what I hear in the future.

First of all, nobody has been formally interviewed. Manny Diaz is too small time, although could come on as a position coach. No on sunseri. Mark Snyder's name isn't on the board. We haven't missed on Smart YET because nothing's final, although I don't think we get him. Foster had no interest, and Koenning was confirmed by his agent to have no interest in the job, only used it as leverage for more money. This is fact. The only name we have had interest in and wanted to speak to that has publicly declined is Foster.

UGA may be the 4th best recruiter in Florida but LSU is the 3rd best recruiter for top talent in Texas. Texas traditionally has slightly more talent than Florida. LSU's recruiting classes for the past decade are better than UGA's. Advantage: LSU.

Also, LSU pulls more talent from Georgia than the other way around.

1.UGA has some of the worst football facilities that I have seen from a major program. Their practice field is pretty much on the side of the road, they have no in door facility, I haven't seen a football operations building(at least not one like at LSU or BAMA), and their student athlete academic center is meh compared to other big schools.

2.Athens is good for a college student, but for an older person there is much more to do in BR. Other than the downtown bars, Athens is an old country town.

3.You guys are not going to pay him more. It's just not happening.

4.LSU in LA>UGA in Georgia in recruiting. Plus we have major in roads into Texas and Mississippi.
