No matter if that is at LSU or Michigan, it doesn't come around all the time, and there is simply no guarantee that he would ever get the chance to play for one at Michigan in this day and age if he were to bolt.

Something people forget is that the legendary Michigan coach, Bo Schembechler, never won a National Championship.

If we win the national title the buyout and contract is steepe. I think Miles stays. If he goes, no problem, we get Spurrier. Gruden? Not a college coach. Spurrier has proven he wins in the SEC.

I can't blame Miles for leaving, but damn I'll be sad if he goes.

That's funny, I don't think of him as an NFL coach. With all that fire in his belly, I think he would make a truly outstanding HC on the college level.

Also, I don't see Spurrier leaving SC. Why would he? Expectation is way lower there, he's got an easy ride. I don't see him leaving. Who else is out there?

How does that article make you think he's more gone than before? It barely mentioned Miles, except for like a 4 sentence paragraph.

quote:

It's past time for the LSU faithful to get behind Coach Miles. Have we ever had a coach with a great personality and a record of 35 and 5. Not in my lifetime! Coach McClendon was a class act that was run off by fans that couldn't see the big picture. Coach Stovall was never given a chance. The "great" coaches, Arnsbarger and Saban abandoned us and probably still regret it! Let's Give Coach Miles a reason to STAY! I will understand his decision to leave for his "dream job" as I did with Coach Saban. I'd bet that in a personal 1 on 1 talk with Coach Saban, Coach Miles will realize what opportunity he has here. Baton Rouge and LSU is a great place to raise a family and enjoy life. I know that some polls rate us as a poor place to live. The "great" powers that decided this, live in such wonderful places as New York and Los Angeles. I have worked in these places. It is not a place to raise a family. Let's try to keep a great coach here instead if looking for someone else that's just looking for a stepping stone.

And I couldn't agree with this guy more!

I would hope that Bertman and O'Keefe have been preparing in advance for this possibility and have at least made a list of potential replacements.

That article really didn't change my view. It's just a feeling I've been getting all day

Hell yeah they have. That shouldn't be a concern.

My "intuition" keeps spinning 180 degrees back and forth all day... one hour I am convinced he will have to answer the call and go home...but then when I consider what it would mean to finishing this season with a decision like that, I get a strong sense that he'll have to "pass" if they offer a job in the next week...... makes me feel like this........

I don't know about that. If you watch his post game interviews he doesn't look too fired up about USC, and a man with a drive such as SOS I think wants to go out and be remembered as a winner. I think Steve knows he will probably never get the chance to win the SEC or NC at USC in his time there. I think Steve would consider it pretty hard, and if we offered him the right deal, I personally think he would jump on it. Steve isn't grandpa. The man will NEVER retire, and never be content. He's just too wound up.

Lloyd Carr retires as Michigan's head football coach

Lloyd Carr walked into a team-only meeting with his players Sunday afternoon and was met with silence.
Someone in the room said, "Let's try this again."

When Carr entered the room at Schembechler Hall for a second time, the players gave Michigan's football coach a round of applause.

Carr, who has been Michigan's football coach since 1995, then told the assembled players that he will retire following the Wolverines' bowl game. The emotional meeting lasted approximately a half hour.

"Obviously, he was teary-eyed and very emotional," receiver Adrian Arrington said.

His retirement was not unexpected -- he changed language in his contract last year that hinted at his plans -- but it still felt like a shock for some players.

"To give you an analogy: you always know you're going to die one day," punter Zoltan Mesko said. "But it's a different feeling when that day is actually here."

Carr is expected to formally address his retirement in a press conference at 10 a.m. on Monday. His players talked in the parking lot of Schembechler Hall as they left the meeting Sunday.

The retirement announcement came one day after Ohio State beat Michigan (8-4) for the fourth consecutive year. Fans grew frustrated with Carr's inability to beat the Buckeyes or win a bowl game.

But Michigan athletic director Bill Martin said last week that Carr could coach in Ann Arbor for as long as he wanted.

This was Carr's 28th season at Michigan. He arrived as the defensive backs coach in 1980 under former coach Bo Schembechler.

Carr, 62, holds a 121-40 record heading into the team's bowl game. Michigan will likely play in the Alamo Bowl or Champs Sports Bowl, but official decision may not come for weeks until BCS considerations are hashed out.

Although many players wondered whether this would be his final year for weeks, they felt he kept his plans quiet so the anouncement would not distract the team.

"It was a sad scene," defensive tackle Will Johnson said. "There have been clues and stuff. I think people expected him to retire. ... He's a great coach, a great man that I respected. I'm going to miss him being here. He taught a lot of great life lessons."

Toney Clemons, a freshman, agreed.

"He's a real upfront sort of guy," Clemons said. "He's a guy that does things the right way."

Arrington had been disciplined twice by Carr for off-fields incidents and suspended for spring practice. Carr made him run stairs at Michigan Stadium for 60 consecutive days as punishment -- something the receiver is now thankful for.

"Coach Carr and I, we've gone through a lot together," Arrington said. "We definitely have love for each other. ... It's very hard for him. He loves this program to the death."

Arrington said he'll have to think about whether Carr's retirement will impact his decision to return next season.

With the way LSU didn't even offer Spurrier a second interview back in the day, and the fact that he loves golf and has a membership at Augusta, I don't think he'll be headed our way. Although, he did have a very good relationship with Lombardi, our new System's President, that could be a big factor with Spurrier.

Conventional wisdom is that Carr will retire and athletic director Bill Martin will replace him with Louisiana State coach Les Miles, a Michigan alum.

We are LSU, not Louisiana State. If you are going to call us by our full name, then call us Louisiana State University. I don't know why, but this annoys me to no end.

As for Les, I'm torn. I think he cares about the University community as a whole more than any other coach that we've had in recent history. Because of that, I hate to see him go. However, I will admit that I'm curious to see what big name coaches would be interested in the job.
