ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Michigan coach Lloyd Carr will retire Monday after 13 seasons that included a national championship and five Big Ten titles, but not enough victories against Ohio State to satisfy Wolverines fans.
Carr told The Associated Press of his decision Sunday by phone and said he would not comment further. A news conference will be held Monday on campus.
The 62-year-old coach informed his players and staff of the decision Sunday during a team meeting at Schembechler Hall.
"It's a hard thing to deal with,'' safety Jamar Adams said. "We're like a family, and when the head of your family is leaving, it's hard.''
The news comes a day after Michigan lost to Ohio State for the fourth straight year, ending a trying regular season for Carr and the Wolverines that started with an embarrassing loss to Appalachian State.

let's GET THIS THREAD ON! STAY MILES.

He should have stayed on until he beat Ohio State again. Then again, he may have died first.

This should get fun.
Mike S was on WWL and he thought if UM offers, Miles will accept and will go public right off b/c that's the way he is. No games.
I agree with Mike.
And I would guess he will ask to stay on as hour HC through the BCS CG. Will be interesting to say the least.
If he goes, we need to look at this as an opportunity to get a young hungry coach who will continue this monster that is now LSU.

Good, he just needs to be straight and say "I am going to Michigan but that will not derail my goal to gain a NC while here......
Bring on Spurrier

no... he should pack his bags as soon as he makes up his mind to leave (if he does). how many coaches win a game while preparing to take over another program? how man hours a week will he be working for michigan while preparing for our NC game? you know that he'll be obligated to recruit for michigan before january 7 plus hire a staff. there is NO way that he wouldn't be a bigger distraction than what it is worth.

God, I love Jon Gruden.

Gruden would be awesome but he ain't coming here.
And I will say that if Les goes, I wish him well. He earned my respect. That's the only way to get it.

I think Jason Garrett, OC for the cowboys would be an AWESOME hire.

Not necessarily. Carr could stay on through UM's bowl game and continue to recruit to Michigan. That's what Michigan Men do. Don't discount Lloyd's loyalty to UM. Lloyd cares more about UM Football than he does about getting a say in the hire. Expect Lloyd to keep recruiting to Michigan and tell Les not to worry about that because he'll continue to run the program and tell recruits you'll play for the guy who just won the national championship at LSU, who's now coming to Michigan to win a national title.

If Miles accepts the UM job,I say he vacates his office imediately and we turn the team over to Crowton or Pellini to cut down on the distractions.

If Miles campaigns for the Michigan job or interviews for it while we're in the hunt for a NC, and he ends up not getting the job, I'd like the see us replace him anyways.
LSU should not play second fiddle to anyone in the country. We saw what happened to Louisville with the Petrino fiasco. When the gate is opened, the cattle will run.

If Miles wants to move on to UM no problem here. Not sure he could do both coach here and go to UM....I say thanks LM it has been nice....Let GC/BP co coach the rest of the games....

I see your point, but the goal of LSU should be to win the SEC and win a national title. Winning a national title should be the paramount goal. If you think any current assitant now at LSU can do that if Les interviews and or accepts the UM job then you're right.

Absolutely right on the mark. Bye, don't let the door hit you in the arse on the way out. Let him think about missing out on a chance at the NC the rest of his freakin life. Pelini is as capable of running the team for one or two games as Miles is; hell, didn't he do it at Nebraska?
This may end up being a blessing in disguise. What if Pelini takes over and wins out? I'd say that we found our next coach and the train stays on the track.
