I don’t believe it because allegedly Woodward has said nothing more than everyone would love it, but hiring a 60-year-old coach who was responsible for killing a student manager, who comes off as a pompous a-hole because of his attitude and the school he currently works for, and the overall mediocrity of Norte Dame when they have the easiest path to the playoffs of any team in the country would not be a great hire.

I think he is a good coach, but this is not a hire anyone would be excited about, it is a hire that people would convince themselves they are excited about after the fact.

Kelly by far isn’t my choice by any means but he is going to be the guy and will be announced soon

Kelly would be a tremendous hire. I personally don’t like him, but he is an excellent coach.

He has maxed out Notre Dame’s potential. They won’t ever be able to win a national title in today’s game with any coach, but he has them in or competing for the playoff consistently, which is that program’s ceiling.

I’d prefer Aranda or Rhule or Campbell, but anyone that melts over Kelly is crazy. Kelly is easily one of the top coaches in CFB.

Doesn’t make sense unless he brings along a successor…. Marcus Freeman?

I’m not buying it though.

Why the hell would he leave the most cush job in CFB for the most competitive division in the best conference?

He literally makes millions always ranked in the preseason Top 10 while beating Ga Tech, UConn, Boston College, and service academies every year. Would be an absolute disaster here.

Edit: after sleeping on it I feel better but still some concerns for me

54-9 is mediocre over the last 4 years?

Remember that he beat LSU with 2 very average ND teams. LSU wasn't great in either year, but they were far more talented.

I'd be much more excited about Kelly over Stoops or Aranda. Kelly is much more of a sure thing in terms of performance than either of those guys. I like Aranda, but he hasn't proven anything as a head coach. One good year isn't enough. Tom Herman had a couple good years too.

Brian Kelly fits Woodward’s description as the White Whale. He will be announced this week.

Kelly would be a very solid hire. Certainly not a splashy, win the internet kind of hire. But, the splashiest name is not necessarily the best hire. Think back to Tom Herman. He was the biggest, splashiest name out there. Look how that panned out for Texas.

Miles and Orgeron, neither of whom have ever been considered top tier coaches, both won national titles at LSU. Kelly is by any objective measurement one of the top coaches in college football. If he has enough gas in the tank, he could absolutely crush it in Baton Rouge.

I'm not saying it has to be Kelly .. but he or someone like him will be just fine.

Good, I’ll take him all day. I am way beyond worrying if he’s an a-hole or not. FWIW all these guys are egotistical assholes.

Max Johnson and Walker Howard both follow Brian Kelly on twitter. No telling if they did it during recruitment or recently though. But it is what it is.

edit: Jay Johnson too
