Ohio State may be back in the OC market.

They would be doing Ohio State an absolutely tremendous favor.

I hope he stays at OSU for obvious reasons

O'Brien is from Boston and is a northeasterner through and through. Went to college at Brown just down the road. He may view this as his last stop.

1) i agree that he's a northeasterner
2) disagree that he'd WANT to remain as the HC of BC, considering it's a pretty mediocre job in a crappy conference, as well as the fact that he was the HC of an NFL team for many years

he may remain there for many years, but i'll bet my bottom dollar that he's gonna pursue NFL jobs due to the ridiculous nature of CFB these days

He’d be a solid fit there imo. I know BOB gets a lot of flak, but he’s a solid offensive mind that is able to scheme up some creative plays to get his WRs open & confuse defenses. Not to mention his stint at Penn State was amazing given what he had to deal with.

You ever been to Chestnut Hill? It’s incredible. It’s not a crappy job

i'm just saying the job itself (lower third of the ACC), relatively small fanbase, smaller stadium capacity (44k), and lack of resources to compete on a nat'l level (hell, even winning the ACC is virtually impossible at BC)

and no, never been to the boston area. i'm sure it's a great area if you say so, and has a great intrinsic value to people from there, but most coaches who have competed at the highest level don't want to remain at a place like BC, no offense

The guy couldn’t win in the NE at Penn State with superior resources and rosters to his B10 competition.

He’s gonna quickly hit a ceiling at BC because he’s not a guy who creates schematic advantages.

There were multiple opponents openly talking about how they consistently knew what the next play was going to be while he was in Tuscaloosa and nothing ever was done.

They’re probably ok with 6-8 wins a year and he can probably get them there.

Would probably be pretty easy to sustain that given how weak the middle and bottom of the conference is. If they fluked their way into an elite QB there's no reason they couldn't compete for conference titles once in a blue moon. I mean hell Jeff Jag did it.

True. Not sure why that idiot Saban kept him around as long as he did

Bet yall are glad that knucklehead is gone

Saban hired guys he got good recommendations on from people he trusted, namely Belicheck.

Belicheck loved BOB for some reason. Worked with him multiple times with the Pats.

I don’t think BOB was Saban’s first choice, but he was an NFL and college head coach with decades of experience calling plays. As resumes go his looks pretty good, but schematically he’s basically Jimbo Fisher where everyone knows what he’s gonna do and he’s not gonna even bother to isolate your weak links. That can work if you’re that much better from a talent standpoint, but it’s not exactly optimizing your results either.

While I think he gets a bit too much credit for that Penn State run, it’s silly to hold it against him like they were really Penn State back then. He took the job after the Sandusky sanctions, winning 7/8 games was viewed as a miracle at the time

PSU had a veteran team poised for a run at the BIG Championship prior to the July 2012 sanctions hitting. They lost a few players when the NCAA did a dry run of the transfer portal, but overall, BOB kept the team together.

BOB got off to a real shaky start with a home loss to Ohio and a road loss to UVA. After the first two games, the team started playing a lot better and only had two losses once the BIG games started. One was a loss to undefeated OSU,the other was a close road loss to ranked Nebraska.

Without sanctions, PSU was a one loss team that year. PSU finished 7-5 the next year, with a 4-4 BIg record. BOB got a lot of credit for a road win against highly ranked Wisconsin, but, the 2013 was overall pretty mediocre due to sanctions starting to bite.

BOB did a nice job keeping the ship afloat, but, I’m not sure how good he would have been long term.

Saban could no longer pull young hot shot coordinators due to his age. Saban said so himself as part of why retired. That’s how he ended up with BOB and kept Golding for so long.

He hired Rees who was in demand just the year following BOB.

Who are the elite young OCs who fit the “Saban offense” that were available that Saban didn’t get?

The only guy I know of who we went hard after and didn’t get was Grubb from UW.

Before BOB it was Kiffin -> Sark.

On defense he just really liked Golding I think. On the whiteboard the guy was a genius, it just didn’t translate to the field, but he was viewed as a high riser when he got to Bama.

I think he tried to hire Schuman from UGA instead of Steele but failing to pull a DC from UGA who is 100% up for a HC job in the next cycle isn’t exactly a swing and a miss.

One of the best coaching jobs in this century, IMO. What he did there was borderline miraculous.

He was in high demand?

That's news to most everyone.
