I guarantee Scott didn’t just start the coaching search. He’s probably been on it since the UCLA game ended and has a pretty good idea of who is going to be our head coach.

I'd put money that he started the search around mid to end of September 2020.
Hell, if he is worth his pay, he has played out in his mind who would be worthy replacements for most coaches at LSU.

I got this feeling last year and I believe there was a thread where it was discussed.

If anyone thinks that at the very least, back in the early period of the 2020 season that Scott wasn't already compiling resume's, profiles and researching replacement candidates they are naive. It wasn't long after 2019 that it became clear O had gone off the deep end.

Depends. Do they want to win a National Championship? If so, then yes because neither of them will ever win one at their current locations.

I agree with this. I bet Scott has a couple "dream candidates" that he'll throw a hail Mary at and if they decline he'll circle back to Napier

Maybe. Names like Riley, Fickell, NFL coaches

Then you pick a qualified person from the Aranda, Napier, Campbell list. Which is still a proper search and those are still outstanding coaches

The Initial "We don't want Napier" talk was all driven from Mascona saying "LSU won't even consider a coach from UL. We're LSU, we hire big names, blah blah blah"

Which is an insane statement considering the last 2 head coaches.

Guaranteed ... Saban could come back and there would be a percentage of fans bitching about the choice. It’s who we are as a fanbase.

OU has as good a chance of winning the National Championship this year as Georgia. Maybe better. That was a different team after Williams knocked Rattler out of the starting QB spot. Will not be surprised to see them at least be in the championship game. Williams keeps playing and inspiring like the last two games, he could be the Heisman winner.

I’d have absolutely no problem with him as long as I felt there was a legitimate nationwide search with exhaustive interviews with top candidates and Woodward felt he made the best case.

Here is the thing: by laying off O when we did, we basically put out a job posting. Those that are interested will be letting Scott know, not the other way around.

What has got us into trouble in the past is locking into one guy and not being able to close the deal. It’s Scott’s job not only to pick the guy, but make sure the guy is interested enough to actually take the job, and not lose that guy in a bidding war.

That’s where Alleva failed in several instances in the 2010s. When O ultimately got the job, we locked into one guy that ultimately was using us when we had months to vet candidates. It wasn’t so much that a proper search wasn’t conducted, it was a lack of due diligence on the selected candidate.

Napier might be a bit of a plan B, but you would rather pivot to plan B when plan A doesn’t work out because it’s a long shot. You have to be able to identify that as an AD.

The trend of these in season searches/hires make it impossible to do that and are driven by fear that someone will hire “your guy” before you can.

Let the other school make the blind leap while you do your due diligence and find the guy who presents the best vision to make LSU the next dynasty for two decades.

Napier may be the next great coach, but this isn’t a Peterson or Jimbo situation where you’re pulling a coup to get a proven elite coach.

If you’re better than this guy Woodward, prove it.

Thanks for the advice.

Signed, Scott Woodward.

part of me believes this but South Carolina is a bit of a graveyard for coaches and Auburn was forcing staffing upon so he backed out. So rejecting those makes sense on paper

It the same posters that were on the original O bus, with a Few ULL posters thrown in. And it does appear to be a coordinated effort. So I wouldnt put it past Ponamsky to attempt to undermine Scott and get the least qualified candidate, hoping it blows up on Woodward, and makes him and Orgeron not look so bad

Didn't he pass on Auburn and South Carolina last year? Someone must've told him to just wait it out...

Because you usually get one shot at landing a top tier job. There's no way he knew LSU would open up for 2022.

The rumor is he turned down Auburn because he was being forced to retain on field and off field staff that he wanted to replace with his own guys. South Carolina is a dead end.

I would not melt with a Napier hire. In fact I would be pretty happy about it. Napier's stock is definitely rising and can reach its full potential at a school like LSU.

No. he 'passed' because he didnt get offered the job. Just like when the Mich AD flew to BR and had dinner with Miles. Miles supposedly passed on his offer, yet they announced Hoke the very next morning.

They don't.

We’re talking about if Napier is the hire. If that’s the case those top guys already said no, presumably.

So then you do the full interview process of guys like Napier Tucker Campbell Chadwell hell even Fleck or Stoops plus other coaches to hear the pitch for a vision of LSU Football.

That isn’t happening in season. So if we get a hire that isn’t one of those I don’t do interview guys the week after A&M, we can assume the due diligence wasn’t done.

That’s no better than Alleva missing on Jimbo and Herman and saying welp whatever I know this is my guy and he wants it so drive down I-10 with the music blaring to the ops building you’re hired!
