I think the takeaway point of this thread is that our WORST “expectation” is a significant upgrade. So, I am content with that

We always end up with our second or third choice and then sit back and hope it works out. This is LSU, why would things go smoothly and with professionalism?

If we end up with Napier or Aranda. We will be blessed beyond measure. We are fortunate to have either of those. So I like where we are

I agree and to be honest, kind of hope it's Napier or Aranda.
I don't know enough about Tucker to have a strong opinion.

There are the obvious "no freaking way" guys like Saban, Fisher, Meyer.

There are the high profile names that frankly, I'm not all that sold on and would likely be a hard pull - which is Franklin.

I don't see Fickell leaving the Midwest.

I don't get the board's love for Kiffin, personally. There's no doubt he's a great offensive mind, but I would feel like if we hired him, that in 3-4 years he'll turn his attention to the next big shiny object. Which is likely back to the NFL.

I feel like Aranda or Napier would be more content to want to commit and truly build something here.

I'm exactly where you're at. With the addition, that I think they're taking a heavy shot at Riley. I just don't see it happening.

If early December hire it is likely Napier; Aranda will be good also.

If this is a January announcement I'm riding for Fickell.

Just remember that Saban was in Alabama's second tier after they couldnt pull Rich Rod.

I think of the "first tier" as pipe dreams that you have to make tell you "no." I don't think any of the coaches in the "second tier" would be bad hires.

I agree. I think any name on that list could come in and have us competing with the top of the conference.

Scott is in position to try to reel in the top candidates and still have very good fall back options if he can't get his #1 target or even #2 or 3.

Posted yesterday about chance of Riley or one of top tier coaches

agree with you about this is the cover for the real top tier candidate(s) While LSU is a top job, don’t underestimate how hard it is to move from good situation. I don’t think it will be hard to get someone from the second tier and that should still lead to top results …. ...

this is exactly where i am except i think kiffin is nothing more than an OC pretending to be a HC.

in the end i think it comes down to napier, aranda, tucker. id take any of the three in order

Napier
Tucker
Aranda

The best recruiters in the country are in the SEC, and that guy was the best of the best when he was there. That's like being the best hit man in the mafia, or the best surgeon at the Mayo Clinic. I think Tucker would kill at LSU

LSU has pulled in 3 straight top 5 recruiting classes. Alabama and Georgia are the only other schools who can say that. Of those three, two are likely playoff bound. The other will be hard-pressed to become bowl eligible. There is NO QUESTION that great recruiting is necessary to win in the SEC at a high level. But recruiting hasn't been LSU's problem...before OR after Orgeron. The new HC will have to be able to recruit. But he also has to be able to coach. O is proving that you can just run top 5 recruiting classes out there and watch them just win on their own.

has some HC experience at 2 big programs

Who cares if he "has some experience?" Orgeron had "experience". Charlie Strong had "experience". That doesn't mean they were any good?

In one year at Colorado, Tucker took a program that finished 5-7 the year before and went....5-7. He then got the MSU job after Dantonio unexpectedly retired. Tucker went 2-5 in year one. This year he is 7-0. Which is great! Until you realize not ONE of those 7 wins are against a team with a winning record (even if you take their loss to MSU out of the equation).

Absolutely! That has happened to us in every coach hire in my lifetime. Saban was not first choice and wasn't met with much fanfare. Miles was not a homerun hire when announced. Obviously, we all remember the Coach O thing.

Good news is we will do very well with all those second tier possibilities. We have 3 national titles with our last 3 second tier hires.
