Anybody else have the feeling we're going to end up with someone from our second tier?

I'm talking about names like Dave Aranda, Billy Napier, and Mel Tucker
For various reasons, I don't see us hiring Luke Fickell, Lincoln Riley, James Franklin, Jimbo Fisher, Chris Petersen, Lane Kiffin, Hugh Freeze, Urban Meyer, Nick Saban, Mike Tomlin, yada yada yada.
I think it's going to be Aranda, Napier, or Tucker

Absolutely
That’s how coaching searches typically work, here and practically everywhere. Not all the time, but a vast majority of the time a school doesn’t get its #1 target
We have a pretty solid backup list IMO if the big names don’t hit

Probably. And all three would succeed at LSU.
Huge improvement from Miles and O

Aranda would be a good hire IMO. I have a few guys ahead of him but I wouldn’t be mad about it

Is the reason for not having Fickell in there because he said he wasn't interested? We could offer way more $ and it is a major program step up.

Dave Aranda and the staff that he would bring would be dope. Jeff Grimes has been one of the best OCs in all of football the last 2 years at BYU and now Baylor. His wide zone run scheme is very successful and his QBs have improved and been great under him and they produce a lot of explosive plays through the air. Aranda is also good friend with Tom Herman who he could bring on staff as well. You know the defensive side of the ball will be well coached and disciplined and there is a long list of quality DCs he could bring with him as well. You’d be able to maintain continuity on the staff and retain your top recruiters as well like Mickey and Raymond as Aranda is already familiar with them and how good they are. Aranda would be an awesome hire and we wouldn’t have to worry about any off the field shenanigans either. He’s not my top guy I’d want but hed do really well and somebody that everybody should be excited about.

Napier with Tucker as a DC.
Tucker routinely puts out mediocre defenses, but I'm convinced he's got it figured out.

At this point I'm feeling like it's going to be Kiffin or Napier.
Riley isn't happening.
Franklin is falling fast.
Fickell I guess doesn't seem realistic either.
Aranda doesn't have enough experience as a head coach for Woodward.
Same for Mel Tucker.
Chris Petersen isn't coaching again.
That leaves Kiffin and Napier.
Not a lot of people are mentioning Cristobal though, and I feel like he could be in Woodward's top 3.

I think so too. And I think I'm one of the few on this board who are really high on Mel Tucker. He's young (48), has some HC experience at 2 big programs, has a spotless reputation, and most importantly was known the best recruiter in the SEC when he coached there. The best recruiters in the country are in the SEC, and that guy was the best of the best when he was there. That's like being the best hit man in the mafia, or the best surgeon at the Mayo Clinic. I think Tucker would kill at LSU

You’re assuming that’s the complete list of candidates

Tucker is going to leave as HC of Michigan State to become a DC? OK.

Kiffin has gotten his day on this board today

I agree and to be honest, kind of hope it's Napier or Aranda.
I don't know enough about Tucker to have a strong opinion.
There are the obvious "no freaking way" guys like Saban, Fisher, Meyer.
There are the high profile names that frankly, I'm not all that sold on and would likely be a hard pull - which is Franklin.
I don't see Fickell leaving the Midwest.
I don't get the board's love for Kiffin, personally. There's no doubt he's a great offensive mind, but I would feel like if we hired him, that in 3-4 years he'll turn his attention to the next big shiny object. Which is likely back to the NFL.
I feel like Aranda or Napier would be more content to want to commit and truly build something here.

I think kiffin is the floor.
But if it does... Tier 2 isn't that bad honestly.
