7 losses in 2 seasons? hopefully 8th soon.

They have definitely come back down to the rest of the pack. Lots of close wins mixed in their as well.

He's a good coach, but still glad Saban is retired.

The intimidation factor of Bama left with Saban. So did the extreme preparation & the ability to motivate game in & game out. Saban doesn't lose an opener to an average FSU team.

Yardage?
Bama 406
OU 212

First Downs
Bama 23
OU 12

Passing Yards
Bama 326
OU 128

Rushing Yards
Bama 80
OU 74

TOP

Bama: 34
OU: 25

They won turnovers 3-0, didnt get called for defensive holding on a Pick 6 and Bama missed a chip shot FG.

I congratulate them for doing enough to win despite everything, though I think it was PFF that looked at statistical anomalies amongst teams winning despite being outperformed based on their predictive metrics and they flagged that game as one of the biggest outliers of the entire season in P4.

I actually think OU probably wins this weekend because Bama is a shell of its midseason offense and its at OU, but

Imagine being 19-7 and getting a contract extension

So Bama will lose 8 games in two seasons and give their coach an extension? Wow! Alabama hasn't lost 8 games or more over two seasons almost 20 years.

LSU just fired a coach that basically had the same first two seasons as DeBoer had at Bama.

Winning the turnover battle means your offense has less field to cover and spends less time out there. So the yard and TOP superiority is cute and all but it's entirely a function of not holding on to the fricking football

Pick-6 doesn't show up in the numbers above, but those 87 yards were very real
Fumble #1 Gave OU the ball at the Bama 31
Fumble #2 Gave OU the ball at the Bama 28

Stats also don't reflect the opening 42-yard punt return that gave OU the ball at the Bama 30

5.4 yards/play is also mediocre given Bama ran almost 50% more plays than OU. Being shut out the final 1.5 quarters is the opposite of processing an inferior team

So the yard and TOP superiority is cute and all but it's entirely a function of not holding on to the fricking football

-OU scored three points the entire game that weren’t gifted by turnovers in Alabama territory
-OU averaged less than 2.5YPC and 6YPA. Against a top 10 efficiency defense it’s almost impossible to sustain drives with those type of numbers as Bama just proved in the SECCG
-You realize OU was negative in turnover margin for the year? The odds of going +3 on turnovers when you’re negative on the year are astronomical.
-The pick 6 itself was an uncalled defensive holding where the receiver, Isiah Horton was held and and wrapped up with two arms 8 yards down the field while the ball sailed into the arms of the safety who scored the TD while the ball was already in the OU red zone if it’s called bama scores and if he’s tackled OU statistically would’ve likely punted
-Bama missed a FG from the OU 18 on an uncalled hurdling the LOS call

So again, the game was a massive statistical fluke and anyone trying to avoid doing backflips to justify pissing on Bama knows it.

That’s not to say if Bama gives OU three turnovers and OU for one of the only times all year doesn’t commit a turnover while scoring on defense and returning a muffed punt to the 15 they wouldn’t win again (although even then despite all that Bama drove to OU territory to end the game when a FG would’ve won it. If those things happen again they’ll probably win at home.

But there is a good reason it was flagged as the biggest statistical fluke of the season in P4 to that point, and it’s because the odds of all of those things happening again are in the low single digits.

It’s also not to say Bama is as good as they were going into that game because they lost multiple key starters to injury and many more after, it’s just that any objective take on the first game would be that OU was incredibly fortunate to come away with a win.
