Hell no. There are only a few Highly Acclaimed books that I dislike. And Catcher in the Rye is on the top of that list. The Great Gatsby is second.
I was forced to read each in HS, so be it. Then after a few decades I tried to read them again. Holy crap, I hate them both still.

Nope. I have never read it. My brother had to in high school - so the book probably floated away in Katrina

quote:The Great Gatsby is great. the plot is meh but the depiction of new money vs old money and the depiction of Gatsby destroying himself like Fitzgerald destroyed himself is pretty good.
The Great Gatsby is second.

I own a copy. Wanted to see what MDC was obsessed with.

It's next to my copy of Jonathan Livingston Seagul, between my copy of The Illustrated Man.

Pretty sure I do. Read it in high school and havent touched it since. So it's probably in the very back of a book cabinet somwhere.

Too dark for me, I'd rather read something light, like post WW3 Armagedón.

I read it for a book report in high school to piss off a teacher since it was on the banned book list.
God the book was terrible. On top of that I got an F from the teacher since I wasn't supposed to read it. So now I hate it for two reasons. Though I shouldn't have been surprised I got an F on a book report I wrote to piss off a teacher. Leopard ate my face on that one.

Maybe slightly over praised, but not shitty

I've said this before on this board, but I didn't really understand the book until I worked at a prep school in New England.

Shitty book. No way
I did enjoy the part where the punk got beat up by the pimp. At ten years old I found HC an utterly loathsome character.

It's on the shelf in between Nine Stories and Franny and Zooey. A lot of people hate it but I actually enjoyed the book. Didn't read it until I was in college.
