I picked up the first book in the winter of 1999. For 10-12 years I would tell everyone that was my favorite series of books I've ever read. Going to just rely on show for closure. Screw the rest of the books.

I’m in the same boat. Been reading since 2000ish. No longer care about the books.

Same I think I read a game of thrones in 2002ish imagine my excitement when
I realized I had 2 more books to read and then a feast for crows came and I’m like where the frick is Jon Snow. Then waited and waited for Dance. I was optimistic about winds bc he had read like 3 chapters and said he had a bunch of pages already written. I’ve pretty much given up. I may read the end of the series if it ever gets written when my kids are grown and I’m bored.

I'm still holding out for him to finish the books. Have refused to watch the series after the first season.

Glad to know I'm not the only weirdo doing this. I haven't seen an episode since Daenery's brother got his golden crown. I don't want to finish such a great story with what is essentially cliff notes. If fat man dies, then I'll watch.

My wife blames me for her not being up on pop culture since we haven't watched the show since about the 3rd season. I assume I will start it again once GRRM passes. I was a little disheartened when I saw a headline that said GRRM says ending of show close to ending of books. I just know there is going to be no way for me to avoid everything from this season. Something is going to find it's way into my brain.

BREAKING NEWS:

A shocking picture of Martin’s latest rough draft for The Winds of Winter has just been leaked to the internet. In a rare post-incident interview Martin claimed to be “extremely pleased” with the progress thus far.

Here’s the photo in question:

You should read the next two, well worth it, whether he finishes or not.

The third book is maybe the most “fun” book I’ve ever read. I feel like every chapter ended up with a cliff hanger and I’d want to skip to that characters next chapter.

They are well worth the read even if he doesnt finish. he doesnt have a flat refusal, hes done nothing but promise that they will be finished. Hard to believe him, but id definitely finish what there is so far.

Maybe I'll pick them up after all.

If that fricker wrote a page a day he would have finished his novel in 3 years. Yet here we sit 8 years later. It’s like he is trying not to finish the series.

I’ve always disliked GRRM. ASOIAF are great books, don’t get me wrong. I just don’t think they are creative enough in any way to belong in the same tier as some of the other great authors in the genre. It really bugged me for some odd reason that he got such massive publicity in the Fantasy/Sci Fi community for essentially being an amazing screenplay writer. Up until the last book or two, it wasn’t fantasy. It was just fiction from the 1400s with the occasional fantasy storyline barely thrown in.

I can’t believe it, but I think I gave him too much credit when I surmised that he would “wait for the show to come out and use feedback”. I thought he put Dany in particular into a corner that was going to be very hard to get out of. She was basically in Afghanistan trying to free all the slaves. She didn’t understand the city enough to win the battles in the shadows. Her leaving and saying screw it just didn’t seem like something she would do.

There were more characters that felt like dead ends than cliffhangers.

Part of me is glad he’s not going to finish the books at this point. I would hate to see him go down as the GOAT fantasy author because he took advantage of all the extra resources available to him (tons of smart and creative writers on the show, not as good as him, but still bring fresh perspectives...tons of feedback from the fans...etc). I just can’t see him getting criticized if he did use any of those recourses to help him with the book. Everyone would point at HBO and yell “He should have finished writing the series!”. They wouldn’t criticize Martin if his version is great or question how he suddenly was able to writer the last books out of nowhere.

Don't forget Victarian or whatever his name is. Whole separate storyline.

Pretty much. The show will likely be the ending for most of us at this rate.

And if GRRM opens his fricking mouth over any criticism over how the show is ending (or the writing) then I hope he gets called way the hell out over it.

See Barristan said in an interview that GRRM finished book 6 and 7 but had an agreement with D&D to hold off until the show is over. Don’t believe it, but no man can question the honor of Ser Barristan Selmy.

I hope so. I don’t hate the show, but I really want to know how Martin’s version will differ.
