Yes. Any time someone says the white man came along and ruined the peaceful existence of the native Americans I point them to that book.

Like when Blue Duck killed Buffalo Hump.

I've read it twice. The brutality the Comanches was a tough read. Fun fact, my grandmother (grew up in Cass County, TX outside Hughes Springs) was a descendent of the Parker family. Made the book that much more interesting.

Buffalo Hump was a polite translation of “fricking Buffalo,” as in the sex act. Kinda like the old joke that ends in “why so curious, Two Dogs fricking?”

It's fascinating to think that the Comanche were equal with the Texas Rangers until the evolution of the Colt six shooter, which would give the Rangers a huge advantage over the Comanche.
He briefly touches on how no one really wanted those early Colt Pattersons. The first ones to fall to the Rangers had been bought for the Texas Navy, (which never came into being), and then sat forgotten in a warehouse for some time. Complete game changer, forgotten in a warehouse.

Some native liberals absolutely hate this book as it ruins their narrative of the noble. They degrade it as another non-native take.
I find the argument baffling because the author gives a complete run down why they were such a tough, proud and badass people. They were brutal but also extremely fierce. They call it offensive. I do not find books describing my ancestry as extremely gifted and brutal warriors as offensive.

Me either. Sure you can disagree with their methods as they probably didn’t age well.. but it was either conquer and be fierce or be conquered and be killed
Libs view it all in a 2024 prism of everyone having equity and feelings when it was and always has been life or death. Survive and advance or die.

Well I just found my next book.

I was about 80% through the book, enjoying it immensely, and watched The West on PBS documentaries. That show supplemented the book nicely. I did make it a point to finish the book before I finished the show, and I think they complement each other beautifully.
The Comanche were some bad motherfrickers. Unnecessarily so, IMHO, but the US fricked them over royally.

Maybe, but the in the early days, Comanches never intended to abide by treaties either.
At least some bands.
They raped and pillaged other tribes long before whites showed up driving other Indians out of their lands. They were expansionists who lived by conquering.
Then they died by it.
Some if not almost all Indians were screwed over multiple times.
Comanches got what they deserved.

This book should be required reading. Period. For everyone.

I checked it out from my local library. Excellent. I’m fascinated by all things Comanche/Ranger.

They were kind of a whipping boy to the other tribes until the early Spanish brought horses to the New World.
And then it was on.

Taylor Sheridan has the rights to the book, and will eventually develop it into a series or a movie.
He bought the rights to history? What is the point in that? Or is the book fiction?

I mean.. tons of non-fiction, historical books have "movie rights" associated with them. Just because it actually happened doesn't mean that a person's IP in writing/researching/retelling that event is voided.
