I actually just finished The Blade Itself last week. I thought he did a great job introducing the characters and explaining their personal backstories and motivations, but I have only the vaguest idea of what they’ll be doing and no real clue why. I’ll eventually read the next one but I didn’t feel the need to immediately start it. Would you say this is a common criticism or am I the only one?

The second and third are both better than The Blade Itself. And I LOVE The Blade Itself. I've read that trilogy 3 times now. The stand alone books are very very good as well. The Age of Madness trilogy is well worth reading as well but not quite as good as the others imo. Some like it better though.

Out of all of his stuff, the Shattered Sea trilogy is the only one I don't really have a desire to re-read. Mainly because of the third book.

He has surpassed GRRM on my list of great fantasy authors for sure.

Thanks for bringing up some other options for books. In 2023 I ended up re-reading ASOIAF for the second time just because I couldn't find a fantasy series that hooked me. I thought I recognized The Blade Itself. I went to my kindle library and realized I bought it in 2015 and never finished. This is motivating me to pick it up again.

Yea it's definitely worth it. His character building is top notch and probably the best fight scenes I've ever read. I haven't heard too many people that aren't hooked after the first book, but even if you are on the fence about it, give the second a shot because that's when it really gets good.

Some very unique characters and story lines. Some good plot twists as well. Just overall very good fantasy.

I said I was never going to re-watch GoT ever again after the way the show ended and never re-read ASOIAF because of how lazy GRRM is. But I caved in and I'm re-watching GoT and I'll probably cave in and re-read the books too (for the 3rd or 4th time).

As much as I am annoyed with how he is progressing the series, I can't deny he writes a story that I am absolutely captivated by. I don't know if I've ever read a book where I thought about reading it again, but I've read pretty much everything he has written in the ASOIAF universe at least twice (main books 3 times).

On the second age of madness book right now. Really is all character driven. Sometimes feels like Seinfeld where nothing is happening but you love it because the characters.

In years past, I would often do a Not A Blog post on or about New Year’s, looking back over the year that was ending and ahead to the year to come. This year, though, as I reflected on the year we had just lived through, I found I had no appetite for living through any of that again. 2023 was a nightmare of a year, for the world and the nation and for me and mine, both professionally and personally. I am very glad that it is over.

Unfortunately, so far 2024 looks to be even worse. There is war everywhere. Ukraine and Gaza dominate the news, but there is a war in Myanmar as well that our western media just ignores, things are heating up in Yemen and the Red Sea, North Korea has nukes and is testing missiles and rattling sabres, Venezuela is threatening to annex three quarters of neighboring Guyana. Meanwhile the US grows more polarized every day.

Hate is rising, democracy is under threat, millions of Americans have swallowed the lie that the 2020 election was stolen. Newspeak has taken over political discourse, cancel culture is destroying lives and careers, and we have a disgraced, indicted, venomous ex-president winning primaries despite openly declaring that he will be a dictator on day one and will govern on a platform of “retribution,” when he is not busy grabbing women by the pussy.

His last attempt to overthrow the government failed on January 6, but some of his more ardent supporters are now saying that “next time” they will bring more guns. There are actually folks out there wanting civil war.

It is hard to escape the feeling that we are living in the Weimar Republic.

And don’t get me started on immigration. We are a nation of immigrants, yet millions of us have now decided we hate immigrants… refugees dreaming of a better life who are no better or worse or different than our own ancestors.

It is all so sad.

Dude is just making up excuses in that blog post because he has no idea how to finish his story, damnit man this thread does nothing but piss me off every time I open it.

I have no idea why I continue to get my hopes up every time I see it bump to the top of the board but here I am again.

I’m sure I just did the same thing to someone else, for that I apologize

So the fantasy writers are finally living out fantasies. I quit reading King a long time ago. Looks like GRRM will be on the ignore list now.

Wtf does any of that have to do with finishing his book? Is he seriously trying to use world problems that are completely out of his control as an excuse?

Yes, there are global wars going on and the political climate worldwide is a disaster. It doesn't stop 99% of people from going to work everyday. Just do your job for gods sake.

I honestly at this point don’t care about WOW. Just give me Fire & Blood Vols 2 and 3. Give me all the details and inside info on the conquest of Dorne to the Blackfyre Rebellions. And finish vol 3 with Aegons reign to a fully developed Roberts Rebellion and the wandering of the beggar king.
