Hi all,

I've loved reading since I was too young to remember learning to read. My mom describes me sitting by the front door with a stack of books waiting for my dad to get home from work. As soon as he would walk in the door I'd hold up a book and say "read".

So I thought I'd throw out some questions to this board since you seem to be like minded.

1. What are you reading now?
- I'm reading East of Eden since I want to read it before I watch the Netflix show.
- I'm also reading book 9 in a series called Wearing the Cape. It's a super hero series that's mind candy, kind of easy reading.

2. What was the first non kids book that you read?
- For me it was Tarzan of the Apes by Edgar Rice Burroughs. I was maybe 8 or 9 years old and we were in the mall at B Dalton. My mom is an avid reader too and she told me to go look somewhere besides the kids books section. That's what I came back with. I read it and was immediately hooked on the series. I read all 26 of the Tarzan books, all of the John Carter series, and all of the Carson of Venus series. Then Pellucidar, and some of his single novels.

3. What is your favorite young adult book?
- For me, it's Where the Red Fern Grows. I love dogs and I love that book. I've read it 7 or 8 times, and I cry every damn time.

4. What's your favorite book series?
- It's Lord of the Rings. I read them the first time in Middle School. I've read them 7 times now. I pick up something new every time.

5. What genre's interest you?
- Clearly it's fantasy and science fiction for me. But I have read a lot of horror and suspense as well. I even spent a couple of years reading most of Louie Lamarr Westerns.

Anyway, I'm curious to see what y'all answer.

1. Cry Havoc (Jack Carr book) and Dreams of El Dorado(book about the American west)
2. Read the usual goosebumps and YA movie books but my first “grownup” book was a time to kill. That I first remember anyways and had an impact on me
3. I would say Ready Player One even though I read it in my 30s lol
4. The terminal list series have been the most fun but I would say the expanse
5. Sci Fi obviously but apocalyptic, thriller, and especially history. My dive into a history book usually wraps around a person or a deep dive into a particular event in a bigger event.

1. Iron Gold (red rising book 2)

2. Hard to say but probably Game of Thrones. Started reading them in 2011 after season 1 came out.

3. Maze Runner series. This and The Dark Tower are what got me back into reading. I read alot as a kid in middle school but didn’t start reading regularly again until my 20s. Now in my 30s I’ve reached “avid reader” levels.

4. 3 Body Problem. Read it a few years ago and it blew me away.

5. I pretty much have 3 genre rotations:

-sci fi/fantasy
-historical non fiction
-fiction/classic authors

I jump around a lot. The only genre that I’m not big on is thriller/mystery.

I am a child of the 80's, graduated high school in 85. So Ready Player One is one of my all time favorites as well. I have read it three times so far. Almost time for another read.

1. Reading now:

2. First non-kids book
Back in my Junior High days in the 1950s, I was interested in fiction and nonfiction about World War II. I'm pretty sure I read Battle Cry, but not sure if it was my first.

3. Favorite young adult. I don't believe I've ever read anything in this genre.

4. Favorite book series:
Steven Leather's Spider Shepard series:

5. Genres of interest: Military, Roman Empire, True Crime

1. What are you reading now?

A re-read of Gorky Park. I really connect to Martin Cruz Smith's dark sense of humor. The whole Arkady Renko series is great.

2. What was the first non kids book that you read?

I honestly have no idea because I was reading "adult" stuff very young, because the books were just around. I dove into the deep end at a really young age. And missed a whole lot of context but loved the language and ideas. Maybe the Caine Mutiny for first adult book.

3. What is your favorite young adult book?

I'd have to go with the Narnia series.

4. What's your favorite book series?

Lord of the Rings.
Master and Commander series.

In a tie.

5. What genre's interest you?

Fiction that is very well written.
History.
Science Fiction.
Fantasy.
Westerns.

For me it's become more about the author than the genre.

1. The Munich Affair by James Patterson and David Ellis. Patterson isn't a regular read for me but I sometimes like to read something or someone different. So far it's meh.

2. It was a loooong time ago and I'm sure this isn't really the first non-kid book I read but it's the first one to come to mind - The Stand by Stephen King.

3. Where The Red Fern Grows.

4. Hard to pick a favorite series. Michael Sullivan's interconnecting series esp the Ryiria books. There's just too many good series to pick just one.

5. Genres- historical fiction esp dark ages through the Tudors. The sweet spot is probably the 11th through 16th centuries. Also WWII, some Victorian era or Dickens era. Fantasy. Biographies.

I was probably 15 or 16. It had just come out in paperback, late 70s I suppose. It may not have been the first but it made an impression.

I went through a King phase in high school. I burned through Salem's Lot, The Stand, IT, Cujo, Christine, Night Shift, The Talisman, Different Seasons, The Tommyknockers, and The Shining in about a year.

The Stand and IT are my favorites.

I'm sure it was a required reading for school. Probably Slaughterhouse 5

3. What is your favorite young adult book?

I wasn't much of a reader as a kid/young adult. I started seriously reading in the 10th grade

I haven't read it since high school, over thirty years ago. But I remember my mind being blown, not realizing that books could contain this kind of content.

A Confederacy of Dunces

I absolutely love this book. A lot of the characters remind me of my family. Like you could switch out my mom for Irene and my grandma for Santa, and the book would read almost the same. It may not hit as hard if you're not from the New Orleans area, but its still a great read. And its funny how liberals like Myrna were just as nuts back then as they are now.

1) The Longest Silence: A Life in Fishing by Thomas McGuane

2) Good question... I remember my librarian giving me the Hobbit in 3rd grade, which I know is kind of a kid's book. But I was a voracious reader, and she gave it to me as a "special" book. Other than that, probably some Tom Clancy novel, as my dad and I both read all of his books as they were released starting when I was in middle school.

3) That's a hard one, because I've read a ton of them (I used to teach English at the high school level and read a couple a week for years). Maybe Little Brother by Corey Doctorow. Or King Dork by Frank Portman.

4) Might have a little recency bias, but DCC is pretty up there at the moment.

5) I'm a fantasy/scifi nerd at heart, but then I got a Masters in English Literature, so I read a ton of "literary fiction." Steinbeck was the topic of my thesis, and I really like that era of American literature. I was also hugely into drug/counterculture writing (Denis Jonson, William Burroughs, Hunter S. Thompson, etc..). Currently, I mainly read either scifi/fantasy or outdoor/nature writing.

Witches of Cambridge - Alice Hoffman (of Practical Magic fame)
Dabbling in a little bit of A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J. Maas (reread) before the new book in the series comes out Tuesday.

2. What was the first non kids book that you read?

That's a tough one. My Mom loved a good Danielle Steel novella so maybe one of those? I do remember reading Full-Court Pressure: A Year in Kentucky Basketball by Rick Pitino and Dick Weiss when it came out (I was about 10-11). I also remember reading John Grisham books around the same time (Mom was also a fan).

3. What is your favorite young adult book?

The Midnight Club by Christopher Pike

quote:

4. What's your favorite book series?

Despite their incompleteness, I still love A Song of Ice and Fire as a book series. Pains me to say it.

As for completed series, The Celtic Blood Series from Melanie Karsak is a favorite. I also enjoy her Eagles and Crows series but I don't know if it'll ever be finished.

It pretty well runs the gambit and depends on my mood. Anything witchy/pagan or most fantasy series. But I also like historical fiction that is British based (think Alison Weir, Phillippa Gregory). Mystery and Crime can be ok. And I appreciate a well-done biography or autobiography (especially of sports figures).

I usually find writers i like and consume their work
