Tradition means 17% of annual concussions are on special team plays. Sure special teams account for about 20% of plays in a game but more than half of those are touchbacks or OB kicks so special team plays with actual contact only account for about 10% of all plays in a game. So the number of concussions during returned kicks are about double the rate of a normal play. That is a lot of extra brain damage to keep you happy.

Interesting so the old strategy of “surprising’ an opponent with an onside kick is done. While it didn’t happen often it was always something that had to be accounted for by the receiving team.
