UCLA Players Demanding 'Third-Party Health Official' Because They Don't Trust Chip Kelly

UCLA football players do not trust their coach Chip Kelly and want a “third-party health official” to be on hand for all football activities to see that protocols are met. Per Los Angeles Times...

"After a virtual team meeting Thursday night, 30 UCLA football players united in support behind a document they believe will protect them in their upcoming return to campus amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The document, reviewed by the Los Angeles Times late Thursday, asserts that players do not trust coach Chip Kelly’s program to act in their best interest, particularly in regard to their health, a realm where it says UCLA has “perpetually failed us,” citing “neglected and mismanaged injury cases.” The document does not provide examples.

The players demanded that a “third-party health official” be on hand for all football activities to see that protocols for COVID-19 prevention are being followed; that anonymous whistleblower protections are provided for athletes and staff to report violations; and that each player can make a decision about whether to come back to Westwood without fear of losing his scholarship or other retaliation."

They can't afford to Hire anyone else. Football brings in $132 million, which is not enough to finance all of the other sports. They have a deficit of aboot $20 million in their athletic dept. Football is taking all of the blame for not bringing in more.

Not unreasonable. Take a little bit away from every scholarship to pay for the third-party health professional. If players want to stay away for fear of the disease, that's their choice. They will just be behind the rest of the team in getting ready for the season and shouldn't expect to start if they aren't ready.

UCLA isn't going to win the PAC12, they were never going to. They should be better since they have more upperclassmen now, but if the demand is reasonable (they feel the coaching staff doesn't have their best interests in mind with regard to Covid protocol, so they would like to have a independent person there to monitor) then go for it. The reality is it's an extra cost and if they feel that strongly about it, then they should have no problem helping to cover that cost with some of the scholarship money they were going to get.

Players are soft, but they are probably right. Chip Kelly cares about no one but himself, and re-establishing his brand to what it once was.

This probably has nothing to do with COVID and a lot more with buyer's remorse to find out that 30 year old "Classic" they Mecum Auction purchased over a new car has a lot more maintenance issues.
