The LSU women’s basketball team’s year-end banquet was held this week, with head coach Kim Mulkey addressing fans and boosters to wrap up the 2023-24 season.

During her speech, Mulkey shed some light on Hailey Van Lith's decision to transfer out of the program after just one season in Baton Rouge. Per The Advocate:
quote:

“Her aspirations were to get drafted this year,” Mulkey said, “and she realized, ‘I need another year, and I need to go back to a place where I can relax and get back to my normal position.’

“And what do you do? You hug her, and you wish her well.”
quote:

“She wanted to improve her strengths by coming to LSU with a goal of expanding her game by learning a position that I played my entire life,” Mulkey said, “because she knows at the next level that's her only chance – to be able to tell them somewhat, ‘I can handle the ball if you need me to.’”

“She had to embrace a change in her mindset of not shooting it 20-30 times a game,” Mulkey said, “but finding who's open and getting them the ball. And sometimes it was hard because she would be pressured, and she'd be pounding the heck out of that ball.”

“Hailey Van Lith is one of the hardest working players that I've ever coached,” Mulkey said.
Van Lith transferred to LSU from Louisville last offseason and averaged 11.6 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game this past year.

She was the best ball handler coming down the court this year. She played low and protected the ball really well. Next year she will be even better with that. I’m sorry to see her go. Wherever she goes will be better with her.

She was too slow and was poor at defense.

Well you’re too dumb and too much of a bitch to accomplish in your whole life half of what she has in less than 25 years…..so yea there’s that.

Despite being dumb and a bitch, he's right. Van Lith was too slow on defense.

If coach Mulkey didn’t try to talk her out of transferring, that tells me all that I need to know.

I have absolutely nothing BUT mad respect for HVL for her unselfishness and work ethic, and knew full well her ability to shoot. I just wish LSU had a solid PG in place so we could have utilized her shooting abilities more. I would have loved to see her go nuts. I think everyone wanted to see that.

Just never fit at PG but you gotta blame Mulkey because she never adjusted.

We didn't have a PG this year that could play against the better 1's on our schedule. HVL played hard and I appreciate her basketball savvy but her ballhandling skills were grossly inadequate to compete in the SEC and nationally. She got picked numerous times and never was able to pressure defenses with enough penetration. She is probably a 2 forever unless she can get much quicker soon.

HVL played the position that the team was short handed at. She played hard and was very unselfish and team oriented. I thank her and wish her well. I hope she is very successful.

Why don’t we let her be a shooter here?? Backup point guard. Pressure on social media also played a role.

Who are you going to sit if you let HVL play at the #2 guard position, SEC Freshman of the Year, M. Williams or last season's SEC Freshman of the Year and 2024-2nd Team All-SEC, Flau'jae Johnson? Poa didn't take over at Point Guard either, too many turnovers and no scoring from the Point guard position. That's why Mulkey went out and signed 2 Point guards...

Looks like she’s probably headed to Starkville to play under her associate coach at Louisville.

She just didn’t fit as being a true PG. She’s an undersized 2 guard but Mulkey is right that she has to be able to at least play the point some in the WNBA if she is going to have a career.

Absolutely agree! Respect for her trying to get comfortable in an uncomfortable position. Also, respect to Coach to work with her. One can only criticize lack of effort, at that was not the case here. A great learning experience for all involved. Unfortunately, the experiment failed despite the best intentions.

you don't thrust a shooting guard into a point guard position.. she needed several YEARS for this process to happen.. shooters shoot, they don't pass.. but she wasn't much of a shooter wither..

That wasn't her only problem. She was a glaring weakness on defense, as her player often drove right past her and caused others to leave their defensive assignment. Too many turnovers and too few assists. She only regressed as the competition got tougher.

The turnovers are a myth. Add steals to assists and she basically had a 2 to 1 ratio to turnovers. However, I agree with the rest of your post. You mentioned her slowness on defense cutting off her PG opponent driving on her. You didn't mention that she also wasn't fast enough to drive to the basket herself...another problem for a PG.
